Dingwall Owners Club

Oh! That is very good to know!

How is the 4 way rotary setup from Dingwall on 3X basses? I know I'll never use bridge pickup solo, but I'm not sure that is even how they wire it.
Good question. I don't have one, so someone else will have to let you know. I have looked for an explanation of the settings, but have not found one, though I'm sure it's out there somewhere!

Been digging through this thread, as I thought for certain that I had read it on here. Too me a little bit with various keyword searching, but ended up finding this:

Neck and middle are in parallel on a 3x so will not have as much output as the bridge and middle in series. It gets a little confusing with the toggles combined with a rotary and both offering series and parallel configurations. A simpler way to look at it would be the toggles provide a traditional/hot setting for each pickup which are then fed to the rotary switch which gives you bridge, bridge/middle in series, bridge/neck in parallel, neck.

I'll shoot my dealer a message asking if that can be changed - neck solo'd and bridge solo'd are not options I'd use :D

cool. The neck soloed does give a pretty good P-bass tone though, when the internal toggle is set to series. I myself would keep that one. I agree on the bridge solo. I never use that one.

Well, part of it is kind of my master plan, too.
I've been bouncing around the idea of taking those toggles out and putting in 3 position ones instead. Series, Parallel, OFF. Combined with the four way rotary setup as such:
1) Neck + Middle in Series
2) Neck + Bridge in Series
3) Neck + Middle + Bridge in Series
4) Middle + Bridge in Series

Would bassssicaly give me an astronomical amount of options. Every pickup could be solo'd interally series/parallel, and added with any combination of the other two pickups (though the pickups will always be in series with each other - I'm OK with that).

But, a big part of me hates modding something before I really give it a workout. If I end up doing that, it'll be many months down the line.

Edit, actually, now that I'm thinking about it, if I just used two of the positions on the rotary (all in series, all in parallel), I could have basically every combination possible. I'll have to look through my notes that I jotted down on this previously as I'm sure there's a good reason I dismissed the idea originally.

Well folks, I have my first Dingwall! I was quite reluctant since I've only played on a combustion for an hour or so at a buddy's house.....but I think I could get use to it!

My I present, my z2! (Pics from a previous own, except the one in the chair!)

Fantastic bass and a really great new owner. Welcome to the club! Fair warning, first Dingwalls are rarely "only" children.....

No news from me at all. My dealer is checking with Sheldon on the possibility of changing the wiring for the 4 way rotary on 3x models. Other than that, last I heard was that we are still on track with a late December or early Jan delivery. I'm hoping for late December so I can call it a birthday gift to myself :D

That is very cool, @Andy Eysbroek! What a great birthday gift :D

My bass has started production. I'm not sure if I can change anything at this point, but, I'd like the collective's thoughts on DG versus Glock. 3x pickups with toggles in either case. I spec'd with Glock at the onset, but since there's no P-tone on 6ers, I am wondering if I should have gone with DG to have a little more edge? I have Glocks in my other afterburners and like it well enough, so I won't be at all upset if I can't change it.

You absolutely still have time to change your mind if you'd like :)

The Glock and DG pres are just about on opposite ends of the spectrum:

The Glock is entirely uncolored when set flat, with some rather unusual EQ points; the treble is centered somewhere around 12kHz if memory serves, whereas most are around the 4kHz-6kHz area.

The DG is VERY colored when set flat, and whether or not it ends up being what you want will largely depend on how you've spec'd the bass as well as your tonal goals; there's a wide bass boost, a low mid cut and and an upper mid boost with the pre engaged, as well as a boost in overall gain:

Until I installed the FDV's in my AB1 I was actually considering swapping mine out: the combination of the wenge neck, ash body, gloss finish and extended scale made the bass almost unpleasantly aggressive with the DG pre engaged.

With the NG-2 however, the DG pre is an absolutely crucial part of the basses tone and character, and I found the DG to be a massive upgrade to my old Spector NS-2 over the stock preamp as well.

Love the tone in that Razzzmattaz track. Sounds like the FDV's took enough edge off the DG to make it more useful. That combination sounds killer. I had an NG2 and sold it because the tone was a bit too aggressive for what I wanted. I think a passive tone control would be quite useful with the Darkglass pre. Having better control of the amount of edge would make the tone more versatile. The high mid cut occurs at a lower frequency and sounds different than a passive tone control.

I picked up a used Super PJ5 and knew in about 10 minutes it had the vibe I was looking for. Is the bridge pickup wired in series or parallel? It's not as loud as the P pickup or the mid-thickness usually heard with series which makes me think parallel, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the kind words brother!

That was actually played with my old Spector though, currently owned by @husky123 ;)

The bridge pickup solo'd is wired in series if you don't have the switches, it's not particularly useful in parallel on it's own.

They came stock wired parallel. I rewired mine to series, it took all of five minutes.

Series gives it a nice bump in volume and made the third rotary position very nice and the bridge solo'd a bit thicker.

The P pups are in series.

I'd thought about adding a switch on the bridge pup for both options, but I doubted I'd ever switch it back to parallel.

It's an easy and easily reversible mod.

Just a quick edit: my Super 5 was an early Super J with the super fatties. I swapped the neck pup to a P when the five string P became available. I'd already changed both fatties to series, and really liked where that was going.

Thanks, got that but just wondered what the default was. It's set up the way I like it and would rather not have to take it apart at this point to find out.

You're welcome. The bridge pickup on my '09 SJ/P is in series. My '13 SJ was parallel until I wired it to series. When I asked Sheldon re: SJ's, he said at first they were sent out with the neck p/u wired parallel and the bridge series. At some unspecified point in time they began sending them out with both pickups wired parallel. I would think that the bridge pickup on a SP/J would be wired series to keep up with the split P.
