I like the premium gig-bags better. In the majority of cases, IMO, they give better protection. And I can't strap one of those big rectangular monstrosities on and carry a cab and an amp at the same time. I do own 2 of the hardshell cases - they sit in storage.

Super 5 owners, what do you set your relief at? Sheldon recommends .02" I had my SJ5XXX at .01 but have dropped it to .008, still no buzzing. I also set the action at .044 under the B and approximately. 038 under the others. I'll check PUP volume levels next and then document the measurements.

Next I'll set the SP5 to similar measurements and hopefully the playability will be sixes. Then it's on to popping the Ptone and FDVs in and out of the bridge position of the SJ5XXX to see if I can make the bridge solo setting worthwhile.

Being GAS free is so gratifying, now to tinker a little.....

At first, I preferred setting four (all three pickups engaged), but then I decided that I liked the somewhat more open settings with just the middle pickup. There is a volume boost and a bit of a bass boost when you engage all three, so it's hard to do a fast A/B(C/D) comparison, though. So, I started off the first song in setting 2 or 3 (forget which), and after about eight measures, I switched to setting four, which cut through the mix much better. The slight difference in the high end was not audible in a busy mix, and the lows to low mids were just perfect.

My ABZ 5 fits in a Musicman Stingray (actually a Sabre but same case) case just fine.

I WAS going to post that I have a "Freedom by SKB" and a Roadrunner case that are virtually identical, but when i got them down the SKB is a lot better fit for my ABZ-5:

I've never used a hard case with my dingwalls. I could see the need if I toured but for my life the bags work great. My basses ride in the cab with me. Never in the box. An additional factor for me is the colder winter weather and with that I won't allow it to travel in an unheated area so a gig bag actually works better as it take less space and is more flexible.

Has anyone tried a groovegear gig blade?

I have a Mono Dual M80 for when I'm doing a full gig and need both basses, and a single Mono Vertigo for when I'm just sitting in or doing an open mic and need only one bass. If I were doing any flying, I would invest in a hard case, but until then, I'm very happy with my Mono gig bags. I have not tried the groovegear product.

The key on any of these hard cases, is lightly tapping in a spot for the differently placed strap button. Ball peen hammer should do the trick. Then the length fits better. I do agree with earlier statements that you may want some padding for the horn to stop it from sliding.

Well, I finally got around to wiring the neck (super fatty) pickup on my SJ5 wired in series last night and took it to practice tonight. THAT's what I'm talkin' about!!! I don't know what took me so long. Part of what motivated me is how much I love the tones of my SJ/P4 which has both pickups wired series. Not that it sounded bad before, but now I am lovin' it!

Tom, I see some really nice smiles out in the audience. Get smiles like that and ya'll are doing something very good. I like the mostly sightly older with the younger mix in the crowd. It is always nice when you can please the full spectrum.

Thanks! Yes, we had a number of people comment on the fact that we had a very mixed crowd, age-wise. Our music certainly spans a wide spectrum of styles and eras.

L&M (Canadian GC) stocks a cheap brand of cases, I cannot remember the brand off hand. I don't think a Dingwall fits in a standard case, I've never tried, but they have slightly larger ones which should hold a Dingwall no problem. I would think GC would have something similar.

I was wrong about this. My ABZ5 fits into a generic L&M case. I don't know about other models though as I only have ABZs at home.

The SPJ5 relief was at .022, so even though the action was slightly lower than the SJ5XXX, the increased relief on the SPJ5 made it appear to me that the string tension was higher. Turns out they are both wearing the same Dingwall nickles, so live and learn. It'll probably take two quarter turns of the truss rod to get it close to .008 where the SJ5XXX is, but it feels better already after one BTW, when I got it last late last year, I did adjust it, but it moved over the winter a little more than the SJ5XXX did, but it is kept in the practice facility and the SJ5XXX is kept in my upstairs room at home, so differing site conditions.

Regarding the usability of the bridge solo'd on these basses, at home, it certainly sounds useable on both basses, just not as much in a band setting without some serious EQ tweaking.

The SKB Freedom case is actually a really good fit for my SJ5. In fact it fits it better than the Afterburner it came with. However, I bought a SKB 1SKB-44 universal case for it (SJ5) and with a couple of strategically cut and placed foam pieces, it fits well. It's a nice, light and slim while still being robust feeling and secure.

What did you think about the ergonomics of the D Bird? How did it feel in the hands? Especially compared to the Gibson.

Hey guys! I'm not actually a Dingwall owner but I plan (need to find THE good one in France...).
Just a question, Im in love with the Combustion model and this even before I knew that they were the "cheapest". I'm not rich, but I never choose an instrument because of the lower price. If I want something at 3k$ I'll save money for a long time and let's go. But the Combustion... it's THE ONE!

But after days and days of search, I found the Made In china stamps that hurts.

If you had to compare, in finish quality not tone, The Combustion to another model, what would it be? I'm a bit afraid of the "wow, you have a Dingwall? Oh but it's a Chinese one, these aren't killers."

I love the tone and it's the only things I should care, but I just want to be sure about the quality of the instrument (because it's still not a 200$ bass). If, in your hands, it looks more like a very high end bass, or like a cheap Squier (a bit extrem I know ). The feeling about an instrument and if it inspire luxury and well finished is important for me.

A few years ago I was able to compare the Combustion to a Canadian Dingwall, an AB2. Fortunately, Invalid Link Removed is located near where I live in Germany and they had (and still have) a few Dingwalls in stock.
My impression was that the build and finish quality of the Combustion was good enough to justify the price, but compared to the AB2, the latter wins in every way: it feels better, it sounds better, and it looks better (a matter of taste, I know). You should definitely try both the Canadian and the Asian variety before making a final decision.
