I have a question about a future purchase I hope to make at some point. I'm planning to get a new combustion 5 and mod it to 3X. I'd like to make this happen with only buying one additional pickup. I'd like to put a P tone in the neck position. Based on some info a couple pages back, with the new P tone in the neck position, I would have to move what was the original neck pickup to the bridge position and what was the original bridge pickup would become the new middle pickup?

Just want to make sure I understand everything correctly. Thanks!!!

When I put the FDV in my SPJ5, I noticed both the P and J PUPs are parallel, although I like the addition of the FDV in the bridge position, I think making it series would get it the rest of the way there. Can someone point me in the direction of instructions of how to do this?

Assuming that the FDV pickup has the standard white, black, red, and green wires, the black and green wires have to be connected together:

Not sure I follow this? I am halfway there because I have a regular combustion with the neck pickup in the NG position. That sounds GREAT. Not sure why if I added a Ptone in neck position I would want to swap those other two pickups positions?

Of course, my pickups are not stock Combustion pickups either, but FD-3 4Ls.

That is all correct. I checked this out with Dingwall and they explained exactly what you have described.

For all you guys who are 3x owners (especially AB models):

Would you bummed with a 3x without the toggles for switching the internal configuration of the pickups?

I'm wondering how many of you guys find yourselves switching back and forth, especially between songs. Or do you tend to find a configuration that you really like, and you tend to stick with it?

I tend to be guy who finds the sweetspot for my ears, and I just stay there. I am currently contemplating a 3x purchase, but the owner spec'd no toggles because he liked the aesthetics of the bass without them. I have to admit, a really nice top does look nice with less knobs and switches. Makes me wonder if I could use push-pull pots for the EQ knobs, and make the switching possible that way.

As you know, I am a Super 5 guy, and while I find a sweetspot for each room, I use Neck solo for 75% of Country, NM for ballads, and MB for Rock. I may use M solo for some Rock or modern Country once I try a Ptone there. I tend to leave the series/parallel switches on, even though my PUPs are already series.

I certainly enjoy having the S/P switches. Quite a lot, actually. I use them in a couple of songs - as in, I switch during the song. Then, I also use them to change things up for different compositions as well. Of note, I play in two original bands, so that may skew things in a certain direction. For me, it is also nice to have them when writing either a bassline to an existing structure, or even just writing a whole new piece, as I feel they give me more expressive options. Now, I don't always need or want those - like you, I have my "sweetspot" and tend to gravitate to that, but, I often find myself exploring around and finding new and interesting things.

My experience with my Z3 for my original, LOUD, band is I prefer the MB setting with those switches thrown. It works great for most of what I do. That said, I'm thinking the new SJ is gonna become a second for my band. Totally different tone setting....I'd say way more mid scooped but there is a few songs where it just seems to fit very nicely. The band mates are impressed as well.

I guess it really depends on what you play and how much variety you have in your music.
I've been extremely limited in my variety so it has really been set it and forget it.

My variety is growing quite a bit when I'm playing at home alone and I am constantly tweaking things as I'm exploring different music. I guess to do my best to answer your questions. I love having the switches on my Z even though they don't get used a lot but I don't miss them on my other basses.
No matter the electronics I've appreciated every Dingwall I've had.

That said I went with switches on the new build.

I've toyed with the idea of adding a switch to my Super PJ. I changed the bridge super fattie to series by soldering two leads together.

While a switch appeals to my inner nerd, in all honesty, I think it would just stay in series position. Which is what I have, without the switch.

I also like the clean look, and I'd rather have a push pull knob over a mini switch, like my active passive volume knob.

And I really could just go passive with Dingwalls cool tone circuit. There's something to be said for keeping it simple.

I've thought about adding a switch to my SPJ5 for the bridge. You have to do a cost benefit analysis, more to change a PUP, or pay someone to solder in a series/parallel switch, assuming you can't do it yourself. So far, trying an FDV bridge solo'd, you still need a volume bump, but haven't tried it with the band yet.
