I asked on the Dingwall forums about how to tell the difference on the pickups now that they are using the same shell. Sheldon said "We've started engraving the shells with FD3, FDV and SFII. The bridge, middle, neck indication will remain on the bottom."

That's exactly what I want for my AB2-3X. It's got three FD3 Mach II Neodymium pickups, which sound a tad too "modern" for my taste. So I figured a P-Tone at the neck in combination with FDVs in the middle and bridge position would get me a warmer, rounder tone. But how can I get the pickups in Europe? In Sheldon's online store I could only find the FD3 pickups. Guess I just ask Bass Direct. That's where I bought the bass.
I would ask the Dingwall on-line store, it's possible it's not completely updated on-line
For ordering FDVs, Sheldon told me this:
"We don't have them up on the webstore yet but you can order this set (meaning the FD3 at link below) and send an email to [email protected] to let us know to make sure to send FDV's."

This is the FD3 with P tone which price at $300. That is the price of the FDVs as well.

Also, remember that the Super 5s and possibly 4s, take a wider shell, so specify the bass you are putting them on, as well as the position (especially) on 3X basses.
I asked Sheldon a while back in the "Ask Sheldon" forum, and his reply is quoted above in my previous post. He provided a design around for the fact that the FDVs are indeed not an option in the store yet.
Ah yes, good point! The link is for the rectangular shells for the Combustion and older ABZs. I would assume you can order 2 of the round shell FD3s for the appropriate bass and send them the same email that you want them to be FDVs.
Hey guys. Just sold my NG-2 and have 3 new sets of Dingwall SS Strings 127-45 that I won't need any longer. PM if interested. I figured I'd post them here before they go on the classifieds. Thanks.
I asked Mark at Bass Direct and he told me he ordered some FDVs that should arrive at the shop in a few weeks. So that's good to know.
Anyway, in the meantime I swapped the stock SS strings for a set of Dingwall Nickels and that's definitely a big step in the right direction, tonewise. In fact, now I don't feel like changing the pickups any more...
I should have known. If you want to tweak the tone of your bass, always start simple - with a set of strings and a decent setup.
Crazy what the switch from Nickel to SS or vice versa can do for an instrument.
What strings come stock on the NG-2's now? I would have figured steel but I thought I read nickel somewhere...
The factory normally ships SS stock, but you can have them change them to nickels on a custom order.
Unless it's changed, NG2 ships with nickles installed.

When I ordered mine way back in December 2014, I was told nickles were stock, and I would need to tell them if I wanted different. That may have changed by now considering the Combustion series dwarfs the domestic output.

Hmmmm. I stand corrected. Maybe it's just them because it's part of Nolly's spec?
They seemed like nickels to me. I've got SS on my other Dingwalls but I'm definitely liking the nickels better.
Hey Guys, here's a crazy one....
I finally got around to doing the series mod to my ABZ (bridge p/u only), and when I open her up, come to realize the ground wire for the bridge p/u isn't inserted into the screw slot?
Never had a hum issue. Never really had any issue with the bass. Only reason I did the mod was to thicken up the sound a bit.
What the heck?
I pulled the wires, soldered, wrapped, and left the ground as it was. I wanted to see what would happen.
It sounds GREAT! Much fuller, which is better for the material I play primarily. A little more growl. Overall, I'm really happy.
Shouldn't I be experiencing at least a little noise?
Am I missing something? My electronics knowledge is limited. I'm sticking to the "if it aint broke" priciple for now.
Thoughts?
