Dingwall Owners Club

Thinking about picking up an dingwall. And I apologize if this is a question you see a lot. But I’m curious. Have any of you tried putting DR hi beams on your Dingwall bass? I understand there are some issues with using some bass strings on Dingwall Basses. A lot of what Ive been able to find searching online is some strings work, others don’t, it’s a crap shoot kind of thing.DR high beams have been my go to strings for about a decade. I believe the winding length is 38” and the low b on the dingwalls is 37” scale so I know it’s gotta be pretty darn close either way.

I can tell you that standard DR Hi Beams will fit a long scale 4 string (36.25”) bass. The first step (taper) down happens about a 3/8” after the nut and there is plenty of winding for the tuning peg. I usually have to cut off roughly 6-8 inches.

I’m not sure, however, about the 37” B string in the 5 string Hi Beam set.

I’m new to dingwall, but I just picked up a Super P and put a set of DR High Beams on it and they seem to work just fine.[/QUOTE]

If you are talking medium-scale Super P or J, yes, they will fit. I put a set of Pure Blues on my Super P a couple of weeks ago and am totally digging them. I am usually strictly a SS guy and this is only the second nickel string set that I really like (Jonas Hellborgs are the other). :)

I use DR Pure Blues on my other basses but Dingwall Nickels on the DIngwalls. I love both string sets. On the 37" I do not think DR make any that work, but try the Dingwalls before you decide to change.

I can't speak to strings. I love Sheldon's nickel/steel & any time I've wandered, I've come right back.

I will say that I'm excited to find out that the newly announced Dingwall straps will be adjustable to the length I prefer. I've had a couple nice quality leather straps (like the SBL One-Strap), and they've been too long and unable to adjust to my preferred playing length.

Sheldon confirms that the straps shortest length is 36.75" which should work for me. I've been between 36-37ish consistently.

If there was enough interest, Jason at BassStringsOnline could likely get a low B made to fit 37” Dingwalls from any manufacturer.

I wouldn’t let string options deter you from picking up a Dingwall. They sound great, there are lots of string options that fit, and if you end up not liking it the resale value on them is strong.

I wish someone would make a really nice vegan-leather strap that didn’t have to be custom ordered or look totally handmade.

Ihaven't actually measured the existing Dingwall strap, but it did not adjust to the same length?

I didn't have one of the older ones. I've had a handful of other decent ones and usually at their shortest they're an inch or two too long. I find if I can play at least within a couple inches of my seated bass-position, I just play better and a little tighter. I may be the only one who notices, but it's sort of about wrist angle and all that.

Based on customer requests, @SLaPiNFuNK is currently working on getting some DR Black Beauties to fit the 37" B. If enough folks are interested in hi beams, he might be able to add those as well...

I used to wear mine up pretty high, but have gradually lowered it to about 47.5 inches strap lock pin to pin. I can’t imagine raising it by over 10 inches on me. It feels like I would probably be wearing it as a necklace at that length. I do like the upper access the shorter hang provides, but this length gives me a nice compromise to the reach to the first fret.

I like the use of the belt buckle for easy adjustment. It’s such a pita to have to remove strap locks just to make an adjustment.

This is why I'd sort of gone back to using the ol' slip-strap kind of strap, but they don't always stay in place and you do have to readjust from time to time. I have the nylon version of this one that I've had for decades, and recently went back to using:

Definitely not fancy, but it's got complete adjustability and doesn't need be taken apart to bring it up or down a bit. Would love to go back to something a bit more substantial.

Hard to use that type of adjustment on a leather strap for sure. That looks convenient, but I think I would miss the comfort of a wide leather strap.
