Also remember that Dingwall have had to absorb the cost of a full refit of their instrument building facility followoing the horrendous fire a couple of years ago!!!

Dingwall prices have nearly doubled since I got mine

I was interested in a Super J until I found out the price increased to about $3600. Probably a great bass, but beyond what I'm willing to pay for a bass. Too many other options available on the way to $3600 (oh, plus case). That and when I couldn't get an account on the forum kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Yeah, I checked my spam filter.
The 5 string Super J's that were shown at NAMM are among the best looking basses I've ever seen.

I managed to get my ABI and ABII at very good prices compared to today. I got in just at the right time.
It is true that the newer ABIIs are different now. Whereas previous models had different electronics and different woods, Sheldon is trying a lot of different things out and there are various figured tops he's using along with the scroll holes.

I don't know if this helps, but we do offer a passive 5 version that streets at $2900 including case.

I got my AB1 new at 1700. I cant justify the $2640 as your not getting $940 more in bass. Maybe if it could wash clothes or my car that extra $940 would be justified.
However the resale value is real low so Id look used for one

I don't think resale is 'real low'. In fact, its one of the few basses that have been made in recent years that I could get the same money I bought mine for new (or more) upon selling (god forbid). Pretty good considering the fact that most basses lose close to half their value when you purchase them.
I think it bodes well for us Dingwall people.
In terms of bass investments, its almost as good as my 73 precision, which I purchased in 2000 for $700 and now has more than doubled in price.
Also, keep in mind that global economics are playing a roll here. The monetary value imbalances have made these instruments more expensive to many of us. As the prices of raw materials have also increased quite a bit in the past few years, the cost of building them has also gone up (thanks big oil!).
Yes, I'm happy I bought my AB-1 when I did, but I also don't think the current value is too much for them.
I insist that the AB I and AB II are really under-rated basses for what they offer (sound-wise). The fact that they were dirt cheap few years back allowed a few of us to realize early on and acquire them

I am not sure they have been underrated. They are highly rated and with good reason; because they are great basses. Even at their current values, they are still great basses.
agreed - i just bought a 6 string AB1 from bass & beyond at the new prices, for the quality of the bass it is its a great deal.
In fact I paid about the same amount as i did for my Pedulla Thunderbuzz 6 14 years ago - and now the Thunderbuzz lists at like $5300, about twice what the AB1 lists for.
the thunderbuzz may be prettier (zebrawood vs flamed maple front, it has a flamed maple back, neck-thru, matching headstock, etc.) but the dingwall is probably the most playable bass i've ever played.
if new prices are too much buy one used, i see 5 string AB's come up on ebay every couple weeks or so, or check the classifieds here on tb.

I agree Smallmouth. There no "underration" of the ABI's and II's. They are top quality all the way.
It's just that Fullrange has the largest collection of Sheldon's finest offerings.
