Dirty comedians

Most the filtheist comedy was in the 70s/80s..
Its just that the 70s/80s filthy humor was funny.
Today's filthy humor is just filthy and unfunny, IMO.
It actually reminds me of music in a way. Music had plenty of sexual motifs in the 70s and 80s but along with it there was substance. A lot of popular music today is sex without substance much like a lot of comedy today. Vulgarity in and of itself is rarely funny and it just seems like a lot of comics today don't understand that. Luckily, there are plenty that do and those are the ones I like
I am not in any way put off by vulgarity, but I am put off quickly by stupidity.
My top three, that I'l watch any time are:
Eddie Murphy -Delirious
Ron White - You can't fix stupid
Sam Kinison - Have you seen me lately
Admittedly, these folks aren't for everyone and I gotta say, thank goodness for that!

I think we are still trying to push the envelope, and I hope it will be reined in once the shock value has warn off.
I thought I had typed Steven Wright on my list. Went back to my post and realized I didn't. IMHO, he and Mitch Hedberg (RIP) were not story-tellers. They are just phenomenal stream of consciousness type guys. One idea, slam it outta the park, then move on to something totally unrelated. Rinse...Repeat.
I think Richard Pryor was the best story-teller of them all. Who can not appreciate his Mudbone material? Then Bill Cosby would be a close second. Of the more recent comics, I think John Pinette has turned out to be a great story-teller.
Best storyteller? Definitely Billy Connolly. He's the master (and yet another Scot). Shame he's not all that well-known in the US outside of acting.
Some of Demetri Martin's stuff falls into that stream of consciousness category. But then he has his graphics stuff and his songs also. Talented guy.
Some other clean comedians that deserve mention:
- Mike Birbiglia
- Todd Barry (mostly clean and has a great delivery)
- Kathleen Madigan ( my favorite comedienne)
At least with George Carlin and Bill Hicks you had a bit of intelligence to go with your vulgarity. Nowadays we have crap like Carlos Mencia (racist for the sake of being racist) and Lisa Lampannelli who is just plain trash.
Hmph, I was thinking this the other day. I'm no prude, but I just don't find stuff that's pure profanity to be lacking in substance. I'll admit Eddie Murphy and Richard Prior are hilarious, but almost everyone else seems to be a lame imitation. I'm not bashing George Carlin, but I always thought his goal was more or less to make you think more than laugh.

Someone noted that Bill Engvall is not a comedian. He may be mainstream, but I think he's ok. The whole Blue Collar thing is fairly low brow, but I enjoy him and Tater. I used to laugh at their jokes, although after being married, I really get them.

Usually it's not the swearing that I find offensive but the attitudes of the comedians. Frankie Boyle is a good example as some of his stuff is brilliantly funny while some of it is just trying too hard to be offensive.
Most of the comics I like are fairly clean or at least I don't notice the swearing. All are worth youtubing.

I used to really like Russel Peters, then he got dirty and he wasn't funny anymore. I like Robin Williams old stand up act and it was full of swearing, but he was still funny. I think many people just aren't funny and they swear to cover up their lack of talent.

The last couple of comedians that have visited my college (comedy central tours), have all been the same lame racist, sexist, stereotypical, filthy, vulgar crap spewed out over and over again. Its like its a contest to see who can be the biggest offensive dick around. It was really nice when they actually had a guy telling his personal experiences and stories. The crowd actually laughed the hardest at these too.
