Distortion into DI box?

I remember when I was a kid, I had a blue tube overdrive that sounded great through my little combo amp. Then I got a fancy SWR rig with a tweeter and an XLR out. Running the Blue Tube into that sounded horrible because of the highs coming out of the amp. It could be tamed by turning off the tweeter, but the XLR out into PA systems still made it sound like garbage.

Is this something I still need to worry about with modern fuzz stomp boxes? I'm thinking about getting a Big Muff Pi or an MXR El Grande Fuzz. Can you run out of one of these into a DI without some kind of speaker emulation in the path and not get the scratchy garbage on top?

you need some kind of speaker emulation to tame the fuzz. i had a similar experience, just mine was with recording. i had a Boss ODB-3 that i ran into a vintage Silverface Bassman that sounded beautiful. someone put a DI between the pedal and amp and it was downhill from there. they proceeded to give me a ripping because of the suck tone that they had recorded. terrible experience.

What about one of the DI + Distortion boxes out there? Both in one? Two that I've owned in the past were both good...

- Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI
- MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box w/Distortion

...unless you already have a DI...

Yeah, I'm actually looking to get a VTbass very soon, but I wasn't sure if I should get that before or after I get the fuzz box. It looks like I'll want that VTbass very soon. There should be a bunch selling now that the deluxe is out.

I've played 2 gigs with a full pedal board and have had no problems with fuzz/distortion into DI...

I did a proper sound check with all pedals including wah to get volumes right and make sure the sound man had limits on my wah so I didnt do anything funny with insane lows + distortion...

I did notice a difference between sound slightly with more highs present than I normally have but it wasnt that bad at all...
