DIY 3015 Cabinet

After looking at many commercial cabs that were either too big or too heavy, too awkward to carry easily or too wimpy, sounded horrible or too ugly, I was inspired by the DIY threads here on TB to make my own that would sound and look good, with a reasonably sized foot-print and weight.
I know the 1/2" plywood with bracing, front loaded, Duratex cab is popular here but these cabs always looked funny to me. They look too "homemade" and well... How do I put this delicately?
...fugly. IMVHO

I just want something a little more vintage and classy looking. So after talking to BogeyBass in his DIY 2X 15 (the real deal) thread I thought I'd just go ahead with 3/4" and fawn AC30 type of look.
My wood skills are not great so I went with a fairly easy design.

I'm with you. I'm going to keep an eye on this thread for sure. Sub'd.

So this cabinet has become a "test" cabinet for a second build. I put my "test" cab together to test it and hear what it sounded like. Assuming the driver takes up 0.09 cubic feet my cab volume is 2.66 cubic feet. I never added anymore bracing as I was planning to. The box vibrates hardly at all. I did the rice test and with 7.86" of port length in my two 4" Precision Ports and got an Fb of about 48. I removed the middle section of the ports and got a tuning of about 52. I damped 3 sides with denim insulation and Duke was right, it really sucked the life out of the cab -very muffled. I ended up just using it on one side only. With a tuning of 52 the cab was way too "Bass-y" for my liking. At just below 48 the cab still has more bottom end then I'd like or use. At 52 the cone was hardly moving, really only on the "B" on my E string if I remember correctly( May have been C#)but here it was really moving -almost to fart out. All This leads me to believe that for my second "real" build I could get away with a ridiculously small size and a lower tuning of about 2 cubic feet and a Fb of 45. More of sealed cab sound I think? I'll post the winISD charts for this later for critique. Has anyone else gone this route? The problem will be fitting in the port length. I'm thinking about a rear slot/shelf port now.

I've got 2 3015's in 2 Ampeg PF115HE cabs. one sealed, one I ported - 2 x 4" ports in the side.
They sound great.. MUCH better than the original drivers. Tho they were fine.
forgive me but I can't remember the specs offhand. :hiding:
The sealed one is a very "sealed" sound. Shy bottom end, very punchy mids.
The ported one is pretty even & I like it a fraction more. These are damn powerful drivers tho, I rarely NEED the both! Not saying it aint fun or I don't USE both!! :hyper:

Either The S2012's or Deltalite 2512II's work well for sealed and ported so you could do the pluggable thing, with the Deltalites having a slight performance edge and more upper midrange than the S2012. In a sealed box they'll go down to ~80Hz, compared to rodl's with 3015 should be 100Hz+ which is very tight. Plus with a 212, you get full power @ 4 ohms, taller / narrower form factor (better for doors and dispersion), more surface area...

I know you've been looking at sealed 2x12s. Do you still like the Fanes or would you recommend the Deltalites?
