diy Monitor's 6" 8"

Looking at Wedgehorn 6 but having trouble logging in at Fitzmaurice forum and have question about whether an eminence alphalite 6- 16 0hm will work in that system, or, if the plans offer mods that will make that work. Yes there are 16 ohm alphalites available. Or are there any other plans that might work with that speaker driver in a set of small monitors with a tweeter mainly for vocal monitoring.? Or a speaker designer that will work on a Mac? Any ideas?
 
I have most of the materials and supplies and cheap source of above drivers and I just like to do it myself whenever possible..
If you already have a cheap source for drivers, then why are you asking these questions?

I have some complete cabinets available used that would be similar to what you are looking to build, for cheaper than the cost of the drivers you are looking at.

If you don't want any help or input, let me know and I won't waste my time.

My online modeling program should run on any computer that supports a browser.


However, bear in mind that I wrote it to support my articles on the theory of speaker design, and there have simply not been enough critical users -- including engineers -- for me to be able to say that it's bug free. On the other hand, it does tend to produce results in agreement with more widely used free programs such as WinISD. It's always best to get a second opinion with alternative software or a forum discussion before ordering expensive parts and cutting plywood.

I update it from time to time when I learn more about this stuff. ;)
 
I don't suppose you can ascertain which drivers are recommended for the Wedgehorns, can you? If you have to pay $20 for that especially pertinent piece of data, that would be a deal killer for me. :meh: Also, that design, like other 'too small' cabs, trades off bass response for the size advantage; are you considering using a 6" Wedgehorn for a bass cab? Are you thinking about using multiples of them, given that you're talking about the 16Ω version? A better use of multiple 16Ω 6" drivers might be a small columnar array.

Great, thanks-tried to register again at BFM forum, but no luck so far with confirmation email, No I can't find official information on wedge horn required driver, but see that on the forum , I can see but can't ask, some use the alpha 6A, 8 0hm, so that's why I wonder if 16 ohm will work, am very open to different plans, and yes its for mini floor monitors for vocal mix, 4 in all one per person. Will look at plan designer, fdeck, sounds good, thinking 4 drivers running at 4 ohm total off one side of power amp just in 4 different boxes each with tweeter. Modest little setup for a modest little band playing in a modest little space.

My copy of the Wedgehorn 6 plans are several years old, but the Alphalite 6A is a recommended driver, so if the Thiele/Small parameters for the 16Ohm version are similar to the 8Ohm version it should work fine.

I built a pair of Wedgehorn 8s and they are amazing for vocal monitoring. Fair warning: they sound “ugly”, with a very midrange-forward tone. Which is exactly what you want from a vocal monitor. Dispersion is fairly directional, within an approximately 90 degree angle, again good for stage monitors. Last time I used them we actually daisy-chained them with “normal” monitors, and the difference in frequency response, sensitivity, and directionality was startling.

Just my experience, we had a local player that had built a pair and insisted on using them on an outdoor stage for his position. His band mates shook their heads at how bad they sounded by comparison to the SRX series.

Try a different browser, sometimes settings or cookies get in the way.

I should have thought about this a bit more. The Wedgehorn is a horn loaded system. My speaker theory and modeling program only cover basic sealed and ported designs.

I'm not aware of any software for designing horn loaded speakers.

No doubt. They are definitely not FOH speakers. But they allow me to hear my own vocals very clearly and without feedback.
 
So, came up with this for the alphalite 6b's, 16ohm, two wedges 8 ohms each run together at 4 with little compression drivers or tweeters crossed at around 4k. Again, vocal moniters in a small room. Actual dimensions to be refined.
