DIY Strap Locks

On all my basses I've used sewing thread, fishing line, or a leather shoelace to tighten the button holes on my straps. Just thought I would share as years ago I tried the metal kind and mever liked them; they rattle and you have to take off the original strap buttons. I'll post a pic of my rickenbacker's strap as an example. I drilled two holes and used 30 lb fishing line I had laying around.

Back in the one bass to rule them days bought a bass with metal washers on the buttons with a diameter wider than the length of most strap slots. Needed a screwdriver to put a strap on. Perhaps surprisingly nothing ever fell off. Probably totally unacceptable in a world where everyone owns 40 basses.

I bought a hundred pack of those red thingies that are supposed to be similar to the Grolsch beer grommets. Not being a Grolsch connoisseur, I had to experiment with a few. Although not a fan of the beer, the grommets work amazingly well. So I bought a hundred pack off Amazon (for homemade brewers) for like eight bucks thinking that will be a lifetime purchase. The difference is that the beer ones are flat, similar to the Fender ones, but the ones I got are flared which makes it a real pain when you have a thick leather strap. Regular straps with the nylon ends are no problem and I guarantee you they will not come off during a performance. It also depends on the height of the strap button. I've noticed some are short and that doesn't help matters either. The original is the flat one.

I went to the Big Box store and bought several packets of rubber washers. They were less than buck a packet for five or six washers, way cheaper than Grolsch beer washers or any other rubber washer marketed as guitar strap locks. They are only available in black, but they work perfectly.

Y'all ever buy bread or taters inna bag? With the plastic "C" clip?

Try that; it'll work a cuppla months until it breaks, and the price is right.

Me, I use the washers, prefer the white silicon ones which are easier to use than the red rubber ones.

(Re rubber washers: that would be a really bad job! :smug: )
