As far as Fender clones blame the market not the builders. Why would someone intentionally build something that will lose them money? Ask Sterling how many Stingrays are sold in comparison to Bongos and Big Al's. Even G&L had to come out with a jazz bass because the market just doesn't want anything else. Even Fender has trouble selling anything that isn't traditional. Every variation or innovation they have done has fallen by the wayside. It's crazy because every time there is something new you will see threads that go on for pages ripping apart the looks and design and then when something safe like this comes out the builder is ripped for not innovating.

On top of that we don't really know the details of these basses. Maybe (although I doubt it) the jazz is the new Osborn signature seeing as he dropped from endorsing Lakland awhile back.

As far as being a Skyline clone anyone saying that has not played a US Lakland. This sounds like it's trying to get to the US Lakland level at a cheaper budget. Something I think that the Skyline series did better at first. The US hardware, oil finish on the neck and graphite reinforcement are all touches that put it closer to the US line than the Skyline. And if it gets even 20% closer at the same price or lower than it's an amazing deal.

It's a tough market. Lakland basses in the UK don't seem to be selling in high numbers. Kinda wish I had an Aero or Fralin equipped Lakland, but I don't like the 35" scale and every Skyline I tried (6-7) weighed about 12lbs!

I think you need a new scale. I've owned over 10 Skys and handled another 20 and none were over 10lbs.

Maybe not, but they are on the heavier side in general, like Fenders , IME. I have been looking for a light 5501 or -02 for a looong time and they are hard to find. Just under 9 lbs is very uncommon but doable. An honest 8.5 lbs (my personal guideline for what will be played vs what will eventually languish in its' case, YMMV) is very rare; I'm still looking. The current US Laklands are starting to get much lighter (just look at the posted weights on the Bass Central site). IMHO a large part of the market in boutique basses that is willing to pay the big $$$$ wants a light, ergonomically pleasing instrument. Roger Sadowsky has figured that out, in spades, 10X over. I don't expect feathery instruments for under 1500 bucks, but frankly, if I'm gonna buy a J bass for 1K or thereabouts, and it's not lighter than a Fender that's only a couple of hundy more, then I'll be inclined to get the Fender. That's just 1 customer's opinion. FYI I am a definite Lakland lover and love my 8.25 lb 5576! Go Dan! Lucky Low Basses.........

I hear ya lomo. But 12 pounds is a ton compared to 8.75 to 10.5 lbs which is what my Skys ranged from (with 5ers being the heaviest of course). I don't think I have ever had a 12lb bass, although I do have a couple that are 11.5-ish.

Yeah-7 to 8 lbs is a very happy zone IMHO. 4 bangers are often in that range.

I'm right with you, Lomo! I stupidly sold my 8.5 lb 55-02 a couple years ago. So I just jumped on an 8.8 lb 55-02 used here a couple weeks ago. I had two JO5s that were 10 and 10.5, respectively. Otherwise, I would still have at least one of them.

One of the main reasons I had Tim build my CallowHill is because it's 8 lbs.

My shoulder and neck don't like anything approaching 9 lbs. Wish it wasn't that way, but it is.

I agree. I had a JO5 all of 9lbs. I still have my 55-01 which is about 9.5lbs.

I have a Skyline that is over 12 pounds. It seems like it's all in the body. The good news is it sounds like 15 pounds. I do prefer 8-9 pounds.

Will there be 5 strings? And what scale will they be? I personally like 35" but I know a lot of people who would love 34" as a no cost option.

After reading the whole thread again..seems like Dan is going to take the greatest hits of the Skyline P and Js...offer a cool set of colors that aren't available other than Black, White, Burst and some version of Blue from Fendur, and sell it for less that anyone else. I had a Korean Skyline..it was incredible. Glad to hear that's where they are being built.


I also don't understand all the P and J bass clone comments. I'm not really seeing a HUGE choice of J and P models, other than Fender and Squire at a $900 Price point.
Plenty of $2000++++ versions sure.
