And how about Wolfgang....

Man I'm a solid Diamond Dave fan. I think he was one of the best front men in rock for awhile. This version, though, left me a bit retrospective. He seemed to have been struggling to remember the lyrics and also seemed very much in deference to Eddie. After reading Sammy's book and his accounts of life with Eddie, I could see a bit of that reflected on stage.

On a more positive note Eddie looked and sounded fantastic and the back ground vocals sounded on point so Youngblood seems to be holding his end down in both regards.

they should let wolfgang sing lead, like they should've let michael sing lead long ago.

as an aside, i've always detested alex's cymbal sound. it's quite consistent throughout van halen's recorded output that i've heard. am i the only one that detests alex's recorded cymbal sound? because i'm okay with that.

They used to be my favorite band. I can't even watch them or listen to them now. I don't like how they treated Michael. Dave looks and sounds terrible.
Eddie still plays well, but looks old. Wolfgang is Ok. I don't blame him. He plays the parts. Alex is Alex. He defers to Ed and whatever Ed says goes. I don't think Eddie ever liked working with any vocalist he has ever played with and treated them accordingly. The next Van Halen album should just be an instrumental record featuring the trio. I would actually be interested in hearing what that would sound like.

Does everybody really think Eddie was on his A game?
I heard a few missed notes, from the video when they're fixing Dave's nose. (That part wasn't shown on Kimmel) At least the band kept Playing but Eddie could've done some really gnarly soloing he's known for and everyone loves to keep the crowd interested. I mean he just grooved to three bars or so.
I mean he's one of the greatest rock guitarist of all time come on Do a little showboating get the crowd going! None of them look very excited. And I thought Alexs drumming was real sloppy with questionable tempo.
Is it just me or did anybody else notice that?

I think Alex was sloppy. I've seen the old band back in the day several times and he was then too. Being drunk isn't conducive to keeping time.

Eddie, in the clip I saw, was worlds better than the 90's version I last saw live. Missed notes happen :) I like that he went off the reservation a bit during eruption. Note for note would have bummed me out a little.

I don't hate his cymbal sound, but now that I think about it, he has always had a very specific cymbal sound. Is he a Paiste guy? IME, Paistes often have a sound that's similar to Alex's.

As far as Van Halen's performance as a whole, I remember someone saying that they saw Van Halen in a bar sometime before Gene Simmons discovered them. The inference was that you never would have thought that they'd become a big national band by that performance, because they were pretty terrible. Either way, I still love VH. While I do like the Dave material - their first album is a masterpiece of hard rock - I've always been a steadfast Sammy fan. Dave's shtick is cool for someone in their early 20s, but he's unfortunately allowed himself to become a washed up clown.

Good god they sound bad and look worse. Eddie looks like he's made of plastic- one of those creepy dolls that haunts your dreams, but mixed with the oddly friendly gym teacher that paid too much attention to that cheerleader Lisa in high school, though to be fair he hasn't lost much on his instrument. Alex looks like Gene Simmons' grandma and keeps time about as well. DLR can't hit half the notes he attempts, and poor Wolfgang, for all of those amps on stage, sounds like he's playing through a Sansamp set to "silent."
I wanted to like it, I really did. :(

Ya, looks like Wolfgang backline is a fender bassman and a mob of 15's, 10's and maybe some 12's? :/
I couldn't really see it as the cameras never on the bass player unless your Geddy
And a jazz bass with heavy distortion.
I know it was a crappy venue but I really wasn't digging his tone. Not for classic VH at least! But he probably was going DI maybe not ??
