DNA Owners Group

I got hooked on the Eden cab sound and they crashed. I find out the news of the advent of DNA and all is right with the universe! Now, DNA crashes :(
Good news is though, @BOOG, that his gear lasts a really long time. Look a his Eden gear, You still find the amps out there used that still sound great. And the Eden XLT and XST cabs still sound great and there are plenty of them used. Their problem is they are heavier than most of the gear out there. Their sound is still great, they are just heavy. That's because back when David designed those the point was to make the best sounding cabs he could and he did. Remember those cabs were made before Neo speakers even became available and a fair number of folks were lugging around 810 cabs.

I would expect your DNS cabs to be around for a good long time. Although David is older now, I can't imagine him staying out of bass amp/cab design. I suppose he's entitled to retire at this point if he wants, but I sure hope he doesn't. I was a fan of his gear at Eden and at DNA and I would be interested in anything he designs for any brand he may do some designing for in the future. It's hard to watch DNA disappear though. I fully expect to be bringing my DNA gear on stage for the next 20-years or so...

Hate to hear that. I stopped by BassPluckers last weekend and tried out an Ibanez SRF705 and he plugged me into a DNA rig, the same one I auditioned a couple months ago, I think. The 705 wasn't for me, but the rig was excellent.

That's one less rock solid, awesome sounding company with (by all accounts) Excellent CS and support.

I am not surprised. EA, who had about as much visibility in the industry shut down with the same explanation a few months ago. DNA gear seemed to be almost perpetually out of stock from the moment the company was born until their most recent announcement to shut it all down.

Quite a few people I knew felt it was odd that endorser-artists were getting stuff right away whereas everyone else had to wait to get anything. That's a big sign that things are not running smoothly somewhere in the business.

Sorry to hear that, it was not my experience at all. I saved up for about 5-years to get my DNS-410 cab in 2015. Store where I bought it said they could have it drop shipped to me because the one they had in-stock had been their demo. I said fine and a couple of weeks later I took delivery of it. Then in 2019 when I was accepted into the DNA Endorsing Artist Group, I ordered a DNS-210, which was shipped from the factory, and again received it in about 2-weeks. At that time there had been no delays in parts or deliveries. Then along came Covid and that screwed everything up as far as Parts Supplies goes.

As you know if you've read my posts, I've not hesitated to recommend DNA gear because I have it and think it's the absolute best. I never had anyone complain about shortages before Covid hit in 2020 and those parts shortages hit everybody. A TB'er posted a question about what was going on with Mesa when those parts shortages started happening. @agedhorse said they had a large backlog of orders that they couldn't fill due to shortages on parts so they stopped taking orders and adding to the backlog. He promised they would again take orders once parts arrived and they could clear the backlog. And sure enough a little while later, they got what they needed; cleared up the backlog; and started taking orders again.

DNA is a much smaller company than Mesa is and although they both probably use some of the same electronic parts, they also uses different parts for their designs. When I ordered my DNA-800 amp in April of 2021, the DNA Artist Rep notified me that the warehouse did not have any completed amps ready to ship because they were waiting on parts. However, he said David had enough parts on hand at his place to build one for me, but that it would probably be at least 2-weeks before he could do that. I said that would be great, so I had him go ahead and submit the order. Sure enough about 3-weeks later I received it and he signed and dated it for me too. That was my first inkling that parts were a problem.

To exacerbate the shortages, some of the companies that manufacture the parts have gone out of business and folks have had to try to come up with some substitutes that will work with their original designs. But some of those parts just don't have a decent substitute. From David's statement, my guess (and it's only a guess) would be that is what happened to him. Really sucks to see a top-quality brand like DNA disappear this way.

The pandemic was declared in March 2020, and DNA was already a footnote by then.
There was/is enough choice in the marketplace the everyone eventually found something else.
Maybe they were prioritizing American distributors/customers up to that point.

According to Bass Club Chicago, which is a DNA dealer, they were selling lots of DNA gear. They were about the best selling gear they had. One of the TB'ers works there and a few months ago, when someone posed the question if they were still around, he chimed in and said they were very much around and their shop, Bass Club Chicago, was selling a lot of DNA product.

Of course, you're from Canada and he had very little distribution there. Club Bass was a dealer in Toronto
and Steve's Music in Montreal and I believe that was all.

Now DNA has been a boutique business since they started and released their first gear in 2010. The never had the size, backing, or distribution that for instance Mesa has. David had the contacts to get what he needed when he needed it because he's been active in the industry since 1976. That is right until Covid hit in 2020 and supply chains started drying up. You do remember the problem with ships being anchored in ports and being unable to get them unloaded?

Besides putting a strain on the consumer, those manufacturers aren't making any money while their product sits on the ship. It has to be delivered to the port for them to get paid. And when those ships are sitting there for months, that lack of cash flow can quickly submerge a company. if it can't arrange for bank funding, that stop in the cash flow can sink them. @agedhorse brought to my attention that not only were things hard to get but suppliers were going under and with them some parts that were unique to those suppliers and there were no easy substitutes to replace them. Sad to say, that's what got DNA in the end.
 
This is sad to hear.

Yes, parts are still challenging to acquire but in many (not all) cases things are improving. That said, there are still parts I am avoiding in designs because of 60+ week lead times. I'm sure David (and everyone else building this kind of equipment) is experiencing the same thing.

The other thing is that suppliers are either discontinuing entire lines of components, or are shutting down completely. This is true all over the world, which simply adds to the frustration.

Yes, we are finally catching up on back-logs but realize that we have been operating under these conditions for over 2-1/2 years. Things like this never return to normal quickly, and the new normal may be very different than the old normal also. In my 40 years in this industry, this has been the most difficult, frustrating and challenging few years I have ever seen.
 
Quick question for the long-time DNA head owners-- I found a good deal on a gently-used (from what I can tell) DNA 1350. Obviously, since I would be buying it second-hand, the warranty does not apply.

Everything I've read in this thread, minus maybe two users, suggest these heads are excellent quality and built to last.

So I'm doing a last-minute check-in-- has anyone had any issues or malfunctions occur with their 1350 in 3 years or less of ownership?

I bought one of the original 50. That one was bad right out of the box. This was about 2016 or so. I received a new one and I have been using it at least twice per week since then. After 7 years of road travel, practice work, on and off thru Covid practice, my 1350 has served me very well. Had a scratchy DI pot, but a bit of cleaner and it was good to go. No other issues at all with my 1350

The rubber feet just barely fit on the inside edges of the cabinet corner protectors...

...but it fits, so it sits!

So now that I have a DNA 1350 and a Darkglass ADAM, my question pertains to the "Slave In" connection-- does anyone know if that is a 1/4" TS or 1/4" balanced TRS, and if the latter is it Mic level or Line level?

That slave input just takes a regular TS 1/4" plug (instrument cord) like you'd run out of your master amp's effects send/out. It is a line level connection that bypasses all the slave's preamp features and connects a master preamp directly to the power section.

I've attached a copy of the manual for the DNA-1350 if you don't already have one.

Thanks for the insight! I downloaded the user manual as soon as I ordered the unit and read-up on it before it arrived, so that I wouldn't be blindly-groping around the controls!

The manual described what those connections *did* but it didn't give any detail as to what type of connections (balanced\unbalanced, instrument-level\line-level) they were, except the obvious 1/4" diameter, so thanks for shedding some light on that!

Yes, I have the input pad switched "on", since my bass has active electronics, but I have the Gain control dimed and the Master cranked to 12 noon-- I won't go any higher because my cab is rated to just 500W (at 8 ohms)-- and I'm barely outside the realm of "bedroom volume". I haven't even ticked-off my neighbors yet! When I switch the Input Pad to "off", the signal gets too "hot" and I find myself rolling-back the Gain control, so no real increase in volume, when all is said and done. Is there something else I should look at?

Secondly, the "Peak Limit" and "Protect" LED's turn on whenever I hit the "Standby" button, and they stay on until about a second or two after I turn the "Standby" to Off. Is this normal? There is no mention of this phenomenon in the manual...

My apologies for bringing this to a public forum, but I'd like to make sure I'm not "in the wrong" before I alert the seller. Any feedback, one way or the other, would be appreciated!

So the deal with the pad is that it drops the signal strength by 12db. That's a drop of more than half the strength of the original signal. The idea behind it is that some (OK maybe a LOT) of active bases put out a really strong signal because they have a battery powered preamp instead of just passive controls. Using one of these high-output bases gives you very little granularity in the gain adjustment. Without a pad button you may not be able to turn your gain control beyond 8 o'clock or 8:30. The pad control drops the strength of that incoming signal so instead of 8 o'clock the gain-set light starts flashing somewhere between about 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. Now you can make small adjustments in the gain control to better control the resulting sound.

Before you set the gain though you need to set all the EQ to straight up noon (flat), bypass the compressor, and turn the shape control off. That will give you a clean, un-boosted, un-cut, signal to start with. Also, turn the master down to around 8 o'clock, or just turn it all the way off. Then we want to get a baseline adjustment on the gain.

Sounds like your bass doesn't have a super hot signal, especially since you don't get any flashing of the gain-set light with the Gain control dimed. So turn the pad off. Turn the gain control to about 10 o'clock and start playing your bass. If the gain-set light doesn't flash when you are playing your lowest and loudest notes, then you need to turn it up a bit. Slowly turn the gain up until the gain-set light starts flashing as you play the lowest and loudest parts of your performance. If you're digging into your strings and it's not flashing, you need to turn the gain up.

Conversely, if that gain set light comes on and stays one, the gain is too much and you need to reduce it. It's a Goldilocks thing - not too little, not too much, just right! Ideally you want to have that light dance when you really get into it, but you don't want it to come on and just stay on. When you get that light dancing you are sending a strong and clean signal to the power section. When it comes on and stays on you are sending a distorted signal to the power section. If it never comes on, you are sending too-weak of a signal to the power section.

Sending too weak of a signal will not only give you very low volume, it will often give you a noisy signal too. Back in the days of LP Records, a 55 to 1 ratio of signal to noise (55db:1db) was considered hi-fidelity. That's why the records (except for K-Tel) sounded so good. But as soon as the music stopped, you hear the pulsing noise from the needle tracking a groove or perhaps some wow or rumble from a less than excellent turntable. If you don't send enough signal to the power section than the tiny amount of noise you might get from the power section becomes a much larger portion of what you hear.

Once you have that baseline set on the gain, then go ahead and make your EQ adjustments. Turn your master back up above bedroom levels. The human ear doesn't hear the bass and treble as well at low levels (hence the "loudness" button on stereos) but hears the mids just fine. If you set your EQ for bedroom levels, it won't sound good at gig levels. So for this part, turn it up loud enough to play a small venue.

The EQ controls are capable of boosting or cutting up to 15db, which is a lot! A very small movement in the control will make a noticeable difference in your sound. So slowly adjust your EQ to achieve your desired sound. Once you've got the sound you want, check the gain. Boosting and cutting the EQ will have an effect on the gain signal. If that gain-set light isn't dancing when it should, turn it up until it dances. More likely, if it comes on and stays on without flashing, turn it down until it dances again.

Now about that standby button. It's purpose is not what you are thinking of or using it for. The traditional use of "standby" switch was to reduce the current going to the tubes and prevent the signal from going to the output transformer. That supposedly gave you longer tube life. The DNA amps are class D amps (power switching) and not tube amps at all and that standby button is for a different use.

That standby button is there so you can turn off the power section while still using the preamp to send out a signal. Most commonly that's for use when recording where you don't want any sound coming out of your cab and you already have the cab set up in the studio. Most commonly in pro studios they will run both a DI from the amp and mic the cab, and then mix those signals together as needed to get what the sound they want out of it. Sometimes using a cab in too small a room or too close a proximity to other instruments will result in unwanted cross-talk of mic'd instruments. That's where the standby button on your amp works. The preamp is still functional with the standby engaged and a signal will definitely come out of the DI connection, but there is no signal going to the power section. The amplifier (power section) is not operating when the "standby" is on.

You said that when the standby was on the peak and protect lights come on. I'm not sure if those are supposed to be on or not with the standby engaged. Perhaps @Bassmann1968 will pop in here with an answer. I suppose it's possible that the protect circuitry is the method used to stop the power section from working, but I just don't know. That peak light is supposed to come on when the output amplifier exceeds 0.01% total harmonic distortion THD). That is still below the actual maximum output of the power section but is an indicator that your signal clarity is degrading and will do so very quickly after that point. You probably won't hear any noise from the amp even when that comes on because anything below 1.0% THD is still considered high-fidelity.

One thing that can normally cause a peak indicator to light up is an EQ that is boosted too high. Usually that happens when the bass is boosted way up. If you have the footswitch for the amp, you can just step on the bypass tone switch which puts all the EQ at the flat position to check that out. If the light goes out when you do that and comes back on once you disengage the tone bypass, then that's what's happening. I kind of doubt that's what's happening, but I just don't know enough about the circuitry to address that. If @Bassmann1968 pops in here, he may very well have the answer.

Hopefully we can get this sussed out so you don't have to take it to a tech. That amp actually puts out an incredibly clean, clear signal and is really loud. It will put out 675-watts rms into your 8Ω cab and another 675-watts into a second 8Ω cab.
