Do Americans need more expensive basses?

Not sure what the real point is here. If you have the means and disposable income to splurge on a high priced bass or whatever, then go for it if that is what you want. If you can only afford something cheaper that's fine too. I have a couple what I consider mid range basses and a couple of cheap ones. I havent had the desire for anything more expensive but if I did I would find a way to save up and get one. Not sure why anyone should be troubled by it.

Interested to see the difference in opinion in that thread compared to the 'cheap vs expensive' threads on this site, where there often seems to be a majority who feel that more money gets you more performance, at least until you get to a couple of thousand dollars or so.

What gives? Are Brits just so poor that they can't bear to admit that they can't afford a decent bass? Or so talentless that they can't tell the difference? Or is it that Americans are just more easily taken in by the lure of something shiny?

One could argue that you could have saved 50% or more in 15minutes or less by booking a different hotel. $99 a night In Alburquerque 5 yrs ago for our trip to New Mexico.

In America we work hard, sometimes even overworked. With all the stress of working hard, we need something to show for our hard work so we either buy expensive musical gear, sports cars or big houses. Even though I have been told the cost of my bass could feed a family of 4 in a third world country for a year, I still bought the bass, Yeah, in America we are bastards without a soul and this is what we do. :hiding:

Actually my wife and I do give $15,000 a year to charity so I am only partially soulless. :D

The thread's not about what you can afford, but what you aspire to when it comes to basses.

Even someone of modest means could probably save up the pennies and end up with a high-end bass or two. Likewise, you could be minted but think that a cheap bass is as good as any and prefer to spend your money on escorts and Cristal.

This thread is a sign that bassists seem to think too hard and too much. Buy the damn bass you want, regardless of cost or country of origin.

I belong to the very small group of folks who won't find that remarkable one way or the other
