Do I really need a 610 or 410?

I play through two 112 cabs, but am considering a lighter-weight 610 for the heavy/rock band. Not for volume reasons, even one of the 112s is enough for stage sound or practice (we own a pretty good PA). It's more of an image / stage presence thing. Around here, people expect to see gear onstage. A band I’m friends with actually uses dummy cabs for that reason only, they actually play through their IEM system.

But all things considered, I’ll probably stick to the 2x112 solution. Looks “rock” enough for my taste, and is highly flexible for other projects without full PA support, too.

You could get the lightest weight 6x10 box built, hollow at the back, and just put the 2 112s inside.

Ive found my 410's are usually aimed at the back of my legs and often I'm not hearing what the audience is hearing. Plus I have to turn up everything to hear through the competing guitars and drums. .

I'm sometimes tempted to put a PA 'hat' on a 1x15 and put it on a speaker stand, or get a spare stand to put one of my powered monitors on. Those are only 1x10, though, and don't really sound as load as the 'RMS' Watts would suggest. I am tempted by one of the apparently loud powered boxes for guitarists using effects only on a pole (no actual amp) but the frequency response for bass is not clear. Or I could actually try my IEMs. I have a link somewhere but can't remember the brand off-hand.

The thing that worries me about IEMs is the potential for screaming feedback going into them. If everyone is using IEMs then the likelihood would be reduced, though. But I am paranoid.

as far as the 4x10 or 6x10

6x10 only cause it has more speakers.

then again its shorter than a 8x10 and actually slightly harder to load.

its actually easier or at least for me to use a 810
easy find used. and yes the extra 2 drivers makes a difference.

I know what a high power 2x12 sounds like. its good, it works
dont sound like a P bass going through a sealed 8x10
digging in and riffing rock n roll on a P into a 810 just kills a 2x12
all day , anyday

A matter of taste, of course. I A/Bed my 810 fridge and my "modern" 2x212 stack years ago. The SVT sounds more like an SVT through the Fridge. It sounds more like my bass through the 212s. The thing is, with patient EQ, you can get damned close to Fridge sound out of a modern full range rig, but no amount of fiddling with my SVT is going to make it sound full range. I love my Ampeg stack, which is why I haven't sold it, but it hasn't been out of the garage in a loooooong time.
