Do my eyes deceive me?!?!? Brubaker Brute in SINGLECUT??

There's a Brubaker Guitars group on Facebook. The pic of the prototype went up there back in early October, it was shipped to the factory a couple of weeks later...

Final pricing, colors, etc. haven't been determined yet. Feedback welcomed as usual.

Nice. Put that MM pickup in the MM sweet spot and let that be it! Should knock a few bucks off the price too :)

Me too... I saw the Brute reviews and it's really an impressive bass!!! I think will be a great backup for my Elrick singlecut, and maybe the first step to a Brubaker NBS 5st!!!

Edit: I find this pick on the BP mag gallery... Don't know if it's already here on the TB thread, but just in case... looks like the Brute SC for me... Sorry if I'm wrong!!!

That's a US KXB-5 for what was (is?) the Standard line. Not sure where that's headed now...

Still up in the air. May not be basswood like the MJX and JJX.

I'd be in for one if there are options for the body other than basswood. Basswood just seems to have a brittleness and thunk to every note that I just can't dial out. Funny thing is I can hear this whenever I play but I don't pick this up when I watch the Kevin Walker Brute videos. Basswood must not get along well with my fingers or something.

I find the basswood thing kind of funny. The Brubaker website didn't previously say the Brute was basswood, but I'm sure I read that in more than on place and it was mentioned in one of the Malcolm videos. That's what I believed it was.

Then, seemingly all of a sudden, people started saying it was nato.

I looked up nato wood, and by the description and various google images, it doesn't seem to match my bass.

I emailed Kevin, and (while he didn't seem like he would have been willing to bet anything) he confirmed that 'he had been told' the wood was nato.

Is there some new information that it's basswood.

I haven't been keeping up with the wood discussion on the Brutes. My understanding early on was that the basses were made of Nato. I'll edit my post.

I played an early Brute and it was basswood. Maybe it changed to Nato later? I did hear it was supposed to always be Nato but something didn't quite work out with getting Nato at some point. I don't know details but I remember it being a strange story.

Not sure where you heard that. The woods were all the same in the first run. The natural basses are the same woods as the painted ones.

The second run is what just became available.

According to my knowledge The Brutes are made of Nato but they still sound awesome. Kevin is working on building and distributing a USA made KXB Standard Series for around $2500. There is one on ebay right now. I think it's being sold through Malcolm Hall. If I get the money together it may be mine. Kevin has already indicated that he'd build me one just like it. In another post there is a pic of a black standard series with a dark blue stained fretboard and it's beautiful. I wonder what a Brute would sound like if it were outfitted with the same elctronics as the KXB or NBS series. A good tech could work out install and alter the pickguard.

Nato is correct , and in my opinion works very well for tonal quality, and fits the tone of maple quite well and seeing that most of the U.S. brubaker bass's are maple body this makes sense .As far as the brute electronics from what i have heard the new electronics are better that the original ones. But as I recall players like Kevin Walker didn't really see anything wrong with the electronics and liked the bass's as is.

From the man himself:

Yes we are going to have a model ready for the NAMM show- that is the plan but it is not the US made KXB standard. The Brute Series SC-5 will be an import and will have similar electronics as the Brute bassses.

Kevin

I'm still going to go with the getting a KXB Standard. Who knows after that I may get a SC Brute to add to the family.

Just out of curiosity, what would you say if there was a correction made that Brute bodies are in fact basswood? I feel pretty confident that there was no decision to use nato to fit with the Brubaker maple basses.

Here are Kevin's words:

Roy,

I was told is was basswood, then I was told it was NATO.

Kevin

The thing I find most interesting about this is that if you search information and images, nato's description (dominant reddish brown with high grain contrast) and images don't really match the Brute's appearance while basswood does.

Nato is apparently used in a lot of acoustic guitar necks, body sides and backs. A lot of acoustic guitar necks and backs look like the images of nato wood blanks.

Really, which one looks like the Brute between these two groups of examples of wood, one of which is made up of basswood examples and the other nato examples?

the biggest difference between nato and basswood would be the weight. if youve picked up a MTD lots of them are basswood and they are very light. considering how much wood is cut out of a brute body. If it were basswood I feel it would be a lot lighter. there are more than a few here that have thought it was NATO . It also comes down to actually what the chinese NATO is since thats where they are being made .I think in asia they spell it nyatoh, here is a quote from another thread.....

a wood called "nyatoh". SE Asian wood with medium-heavy density (similar to rock maple), yellowish color.
If you look up that wood you will see that it looks to be the same as on the brute also with its comparable weight to maple it fits with the weight of the brute basswood however would be much lighter.
