Do Only Prog-Fans Like Chris Squire?

Odd question
If one does not like Yes or Prog music why would they like a certain player?
I do not like prog and I am not a fan of Yes or Chris.
That does not mean that I do not appreciate his musical skills as a bassist. He is a great musician, I just do not care for his music.

 

I am not a great fan of Prog, but I love Chris Squire, and I guess I like Prog more than I realize because there I really like John Wetton too.

 

I'd rather see Chris is a straight up rock band. As far as prog rock goes, although I don't like Yes, they're a lot more fun to listen to than the rambling stuff that bands like Phish do, and Chris's tone is a whole lot cooler.

He's an amazing, innovative, hugely influential player.

 

Agreed, it'd be different...but I'd wanna hear his take on those parts.

 

I think it's unfair to have a thread about Chris Squire, that i can't respond to. The 'Post Reply' button is just staring at me. It's cruel and unusual and I want to protest. This thread is unfair to Prog fans. I'll be setting up picket lines momentarily. I feel like a Fish out of Water.

Thanks, I understand what it means. I already did actually. I've been a music fan since the early 70's. I never said I didn't like prog, not sure where you got that. There are plenty of new/newer prog bands. The genre is defined by unconventional songwriting and structure. Yes, Rush, ELP, King Crimson and all the other commercial, common prog bands are fairly played. Progressive rock didn't stop there, although that's where it started.

There's also Orphan Project, Toe, Spock's Beard, Riverside (Poland), Pelican, Godspeed You Black Emperor.
Just to name a few.

As for Chris Squire, he's one of my top three or so bass gods when I was growing up, but that's probably because I am a prog fan.

Jaco Pastorius? Until I came to TB I honestly had no idea who he was. Same with Vic Wooten. Stanley Clarke I knew only because he and I are both from the Philadelphia area, so he was talked about locally. Those guys are all awesome bassists, but I don't listen to jazz/fusion so I can't really call myself a "fan".

 

listen to the first two Yes albums, no PROG there. Great 60s music, even a Beatles cover.

 

I actually I became a fan when he was a member of UK. I heard his King Crimson work later.
