Do other Bass forums hate TB?

Martin :scowl: They started life as the Unofficial Taylor forum. ;)

LOL, they're fairly anti-Taylor at the moment. Bob Taylor can't seem to do anything without most guitar forums ripping him apart. He started using "flawed" ebony because he found out those trees were simply left to rot in the jungle. This move basically increased the ebony supply ten fold. Nope. Angry guitarists still picked him apart.

Why? Speaking in general terms, it's because unhappy, uncontented, spiteful people always need a reason to bitch to feel validated.

To herd / rally others (i.e., another forum) into grabbing torches for such idiocy-causes to legitimize their stance / delusion...

Either their rampant sense of self entitlement will not allow them to play nice with others or follow simple rules, for things they feel they should have control over without an ounce of effort or ownership put in,

or damnit, the world just freakin owes them a soapbox. If it wasn't hating about this site, it'd be about something else, no word of doubt.

Ooooh, to be such rebels. Must suck to be in their shoes, such petty existence. I'll show them! I'll HATE THEIR WEBSITE! TAKE THAT!

Only read the first 2 pages, the theme remains the same. For me I have gone to other pages for information about one specific brand or another and have found them to be populated by people with narrow ideas as to what works and what doesn't. For example I was looking for a gig bag for a Ric recently and while I didn't post I did use the search function (gasp!) to find an answer, and 80% of replies were "I would never put a Ric in a bag, you are an idiot" or along those lines, the rest were of the mind there's no place where bag would work that they wouldn't be willing to shlep a hardshell case. Sure I pulled the 80% figure from you know where, but you get the idea. While you may find a greater concentration on subject matter experts elsewhere, you'll find experts on the TB forums as well, and for the most part they'll be open to alternatives.

I love talkbass, but I do have accounts on a couple other (unnamed) bass forum websites, and most of the people on them seem to have some type of resentment or maybe even jelousy towards TB. They see us as snobby and rude. Why do you think other bass forums see us this way? Don't they realize we're the coolest cats around? 🐌

When people tell me I'm snobby or rude, I shout, "SHUT UP," and then push them. Then I calmly explain that they are simply not as good as I am.

AT ANYTHING.

Some of us like to talk politics, religion, look at hot women, and drop f-bombs every so often. Some of us also have a general disdain for rules and being policed. :ninja:

I know, I know... "Go somewhere else!", you'll say. Way to be inclusive! I kid, I kid. The reality of it is that it's tough to find forums that are active and allow that stuff along with everything bass. I used to be pretty active on HC until they changed things up. That's pretty much when I came here.

Maybe being PG-13 instead of straight PG would suit me better.

There is a whole internet full of chuckleheads spouting off with their political opinions. This community has an international feel, so YOUR politics may be of no interest to a poster from elsewhere.

As for F-Bombs and sexy women, you can't swing a dead mouse without hitting one, on most of the internet.

Some do. I helped run what was (at the time) the biggest bass players group on Facebook, and there was quite a large number of people in that group who despised TB for being too elitist. I actually first heard of TB through those guys, though I wouldn't finally visit TB until a year or two later.

Perhaps some of the elitism was due to some insecurity on their part?

Snob factor seemed significantly higher with local bands in person.

There is perhaps a certain knucklehead factor simply because it's a musician site. As a whole, it would seem that bassists tend to be more critical thinkers than guitarists and way less egotistical than most singers.

IDK, the cycling forum I frequent seems to be filled with angry middle aged men. It seems that numbers are starting to dwindle due to the asshattery.

There are other bass forums? ;)

BA-ZING.gif

Although to be fair this is the largest forum for bassists (and likely one of the largest music forums, period) so it makes sense that others would be jealous of how much attention this place gets. Plus I don't see Tony Grey, JMJ, Juan Alderete, Johnny April, or the Berklee School of Music active on other forums.

I know that TB isn't real popular over at the Ken Smith forums. :D

With that said, I'm with the people who say that TB is a cool site, but still not perfect. I don't think the rules are unreasonable. I also think most of the mods are pretty cool, but there is a very small handful who take themselves a little too seriously, IMHO. However, when one of them seems to be power trippin', I just roll my eyes and go about my day. I do think that TB can be rather cliquish. And some of the brand hype can get a little ridiculous here (I've owned an Avatar cab, and sorry, they're not an Eden, Aguilar, Berg, SWR, or any other high-end cabinet that people have tried to compare them to; they're maybe a step above Peavey). It's also annoying when someone posts in the amp forum, "Hey, I'm looking for a ported 4x10 in the $800 range, weight is a consideration, I play blues and country, any recommendations?" and then a bunch of people response with "Get a fEarful." :rollno:

With that said, those are pretty small gripes for an awesome site. You're not going to please all people at all times. However, I don't see Talkbass as being elitist. Yes, there are a couple elitists running around on the forums, but I've been on some forums overrun with elitists, and TB ain't one of them.

As someone that came to TB long after being on other unamed bass forums I was actually quite surprised at the amount of hateful vitriol that is allowed here.
I specifically recall a Gibson v. Fender thread that was beyond distasteful, filled with a great deal of misinformation and prejudice - really a big put off.
Currently I actually spend more of my online time on another, smaller forum, it's more personal and we can exchange very specific info without all the useless, hateful uninformed posts.

Don't get me wrong, there many, many, very nice people here that know how to post in a respectful intelligent way, kudos to them. I've certainly learned a great deal and enjoy my time here.

Perhaps some of the elitism was due to some insecurity on their part?

Could have been. The biggest critics I recall seeing and have continued to see since then are:

- TB needs to lighten up on it's swearing policy
(I disagree with this. I think the mods strike a good balance in this regard)
- It's not uncommon for members to dog pile on certain members for whatever number of reasons
(I do agree that this can be a problem, but the mods do a good job keeping it to a minimum)
- Some members take themselves and their opinions way too seriously
(This is another that I sometimes agree with, but, again, I don't think it's too big of a problem)

Personally, I think TB is the best forum I've ever been involved with. Considering its size, the mods and admins do a great job keeping this place running smoothly. I'm glad this place exists, and I'm proud to be a member :)

I wouldn't take this guy seriously. Nobody liked him and he was banned for a reason.

He "lost" a debate against me and sent me a PM about how bad my music was. At least, I'm pretty sure it was him.

Nelson (plangentmusic) was always interesting.

I'm a member of another forum that also had Nelson as a regular visitor. It was a drum forum. He would continually post up his playing - usually covers - and get sarky when nobody replied. After a while, I listened to a few of them and realised that the drums were programmed. He was trying to pass them off as 'live' but they were definitely not.

I have no issue with programmed drums, I just have an issue with dishonesty. In the end, I called him on it and he started getting defensive. After a while, he finally snapped and started attacking me personally. I pointed out a few home truths to him (he was a bodybuilder that advocated steroid use) and he really lost it then and was subsequently banned.

The man has an ego bigger than Jeff Berlin's. With none of the talent. A seriously messed up puppy.

Well, over the years I have been the administrator of a music forum ( still am) and been involved and usually banned from a few others. Mostly over arguments about politics. I have been given a few 30 day "Vacations" from TB, mostly for the same reason. Over time I have come to appreciate the rules at TB much more. Let's face it, if you want to argue politics there are many, much more suitable places to do so. Musicians for the most part should really shut up and play.

As for the swearing policy, I think that the mods let a lot of the more common, typical, small stuff go. I am a guy who uses the F word probably 100 times a day in real life, but considering the fact that here at TB I am not in the kitchen with my buddies and many people here do NOT appreciate vulgarity like I do ( not to mention the fact that there are children reading these pages) it is my opinion that the rules against swearing and pornography are perfectly proper. I really don't have an issue with ANY of the rules here. As for cliques, snobbery and general asshattery, find me a place on the internet that isn't full of that.

And I was serious when I said I have never heard of another full on, bass only forum.

I curse and swear as well as anyone you'll meet but for the life of me I don't see the TB rules being very hard to follow. No religion, no politics and no insults are the standard, basic rules of polite conversation. Considering that this site serves a particular pursuit (bass), and is open to members of all ages, I dont think those rules are really asking for too much. And its not like you can't find boobs and cursing in almost every dark, and not so dark, corner of the internet.

Hmmmm, perhaps he wasn't the user who PM'd me that my bass playing sucked. This particular guy was some sort of jazz guitarist and wanted a Fodera at Fender prices.

I really like TB. Is it perfect? No. But the rules are the rules and are there for everyone to abide by. I think the Mods do a good job considering how many thousands of new posts are on here every week.

You can boil 98% of the rules here down to two words: be respectful. I guess there are some people who can't handle that. But when I visit some website and the user comments are full of racism, profanity, and insults, I feel like the entire experience has been made stupid. So I'm inclined to believe that the rules here keep the average intelligence level of the commentary a bit higher, which I value a lot.

^100% THIS. I don't understand people joining TB, then complaining about why it can't be more like other forums. If you want the other stuff, go somewhere else.
