Do other Bass forums hate TB?

For something a bit more accurate, simply add "site:talkbass.com " (with a space after) to constrain results to TB only. Yay Google!

As for TB being hated, well I've never experienced that anywhere on the net.

IIRC, he may have been banned at the forum that's run by BP magazine, too. I hang at that forum as well. It's a different sort of vibe, but a cool community. I go there for some things, and hang at TB for others. Generally, I don't see anyone bashing TB over there.

I will say this: TB is very structured. And it brings together A LOT of people. And the Ask a Pro section is fantastic!

I was a little disappointed that the Jeff Berlin thing went down like it did. I think Jeff has a tremendous amount to offer this community from a purely musical standpoint. But Jeff is very opinionated about musical education, and wasn't one to let things go and was prepared to engage on the subject of education. I think that passion is probably what's carried him forth through a long and successful career.

But let's face facts: TB is a very gear-centric community. And when it comes to theory and technique? There are also a lot of players who are self-taught and put forth that this mindset has served them very well, so why should they believe in Jeff's music education approach? I suspect that too often, Jeff took the troll bait and got into conflicts unnecessarily over something that cared about immensely: educating musicians.

I used to use the Sputnik Music bass subforum. There was a guy named Raayl who used to act like a jerk on the forums but still manage not to be banned.

He made a thread calling TBers a bunch of hacks that never played out. He was, coincidentally a hack that never played out.

He specifically called out Jaco III-X. Now Jaco's music certainly is not my cup of tea, but I found it ridiculous to make a thread on another forum just to troll some guy he'd never met.

Most of the other posters seemed to agree with him, but if you look for it you'll find that forum now dead and archived and this one still busy.

As for the swearing policy, I think that the mods let a lot of the more common, typical, small stuff go. I am a guy who uses the F word probably 100 times a day in real life, but considering the fact that here at TB I am not in the kitchen with my buddies and many people here do NOT appreciate vulgarity like I do ( not to mention the fact that there are children reading these pages) it is my opinion that the rules against swearing and pornography are perfectly proper. I really don't have an issue with ANY of the rules here. As for cliques, snobbery and general asshattery, find me a place on the internet that isn't full of that.

And I was serious when I said I have never heard of another full on, bass only forum.

The swearing policy here seems to be pretty simple. If you can say it on network TV (or even some cable shows) you can get away with it here.

Good point. I've had the pleasure of meeting and yakking with Jauqo (who didn't even try to kill me or anything) and other TBers. You can't experience the full personality of someone on an internet forum. I think we all have a forum persona that is just a small representation of who we are in real life. Jauqo's a lot more laid back than you might expect. A real life conversation adds a whole other dimension to a person.

People want all the pros of TB but without any of its 'perceived cons'. However, it's my opinion that TB wouldn't have as many things in its pros column if it weren't also for these wrongly perceived cons. YMMV.

Thanks Munji.


Kat's hide behind screen names and talk a bunch of smack about people and find reasons in their mind not to like a person on a forum sometimes, simply because that's what they are about and these type of individuals work very hard making things negative while hoping to get a mob of others to follow.

I've learned that most of the kats on talkbass or any other forum that carry on like that really are losers and not players at all. But we have to remember that every one is entitled to their opinion but a lot of it has surpassed opinion(s) and some how becomes hate and we all can agree that hate and brewing hate is not a good thing.




I may be a hack but I'm the koolest hack :)

Very, very difficult if not impossible to control conflicts of interest. We all have them... gear loyalty, endorsements, etc.

Members that are aggressively opinionated with a lack of objectivity do themselves a disservice every time they post. Their pattern becomes obvious and they end up sounding the crazy dude that's always spouting off at the end of the bar. Their words end up getting no traction at all. In the end, it works itself out.

I'm glad that I'm in touch with my dumbness and old enough to know what levels of pride and embarrassment I'm comfortable with that I don't have to pretend to be someone I'm not on TB. That would be entirely too much work. I guess I should add laziness to my list of attributes. :smug:
