My girlfriend and I share the same taste in music to an extent, she likes the deftones,tool,mudvayne,rush, motorhead, claypool, that i like but she will also be heard blasting the black eyed peas pulling in the driveway. no BEP for me

Do Those Close To You Hate Music You Like?

I am a life long die hard metal head surrounded by country, Americana, and folk music fans, that includes every single musician I know.
At least I'm lucky, they all like that early raw Americana style where as far as they are concerned nothing past Hank Williams Sr. is worth a tin whistle. And to be honest I can appreciate it, it has serious grit with heart, soul and honesty. Unfortunately this respect is far from a two way street.
I like me some thrash/death/brutal/doom/viking/folk/power/speed/thrash (yes I said thrash twice) metal.

Some of it. I've turned my fiance onto metallica and breaking benjamin. Most other bands I listen to she can tolerate, but she hates bad religion, and mudvayne, can't stand to listen to mudvayne. Usually I use mudvayne as punishment for when she makes me listen to Pink, and Lady Gaga in her car..
I just like the raw sound of a 3-piece rock band, especially live. That's pretty much my favorite kind of music. If I were around someone who hated it, I'm not quite sure how I would handle that. The only solution I can think of is to play it and/or listen to it in private as much as humanly possible.

But of course, when I say "Rush" or "The Who", "Yes", or "Kansas" to a girl, they return with a stare like I've spoken in tongues.
My parents don't mind my music (minus Maiden) too much though, so I am blessed with support. And, my bandmates are into a lot of the same stuff, so I don't really have it too bad off.

but people who berate me and criticize my tunes when i have them on? that's too much. it really can suck the fun out of music when someone acts like that.
others have a right to their opinions, but that doesn't mean that i have a duty to listen to them...

Wife likes some of the music that I like but not much. My son likes the same bands as I do. His favorites are Led Zeppelin, KISS, Aerosmith, Queen and Grand Funk Railroad,
Short answer would be: Yes. But with Death Metal as my "favorite" genre I have never had high expectations when it comes to people I know. Never been a problem for me, will always love my music no matter what anyone else thinks

Absolutely. There's a lot that can be rather average in a studio, but when live, it really kicks up.

my girlfriend loves all the music I love, idunno i'm quite philosophical about music in general for me it's part of the connection
My mom HATES the grand majority of the music I listen to, which is mostly proggy stuff mixed in with some folk and other bits and pieces. She once said that Geddy Lee 'sounds like he's being castrated or has his balls caught in his zip' and 'looks like a rapist/pedophile' (yeah, I'm serious. And I happen to find Geddy Lee pretty good looking).

My friends on the other hand; it's hit or miss. One buddy loves 80's hair metal, which makes me want to puke. Another likes mainstream rock, ie RHCP, Stained, etc. Stuff which makes my skin crawl.
Yeah, I said it, I think RHCP is an overrated wet mess. I'll echo Mike Patton and say while they were mildly interesting in the early 80's they have sense lost that in spades. Also Anthony Kiedis is a total douche bag.

I'd say this is another example that the plague known as "Bieber Fever" must be stopped before life as we know it ceases to exist!!!

Heh, my girlfriend and I do enjoy a lot of similar tastes, and we have had a few really good times sharing music with each other and going to concerts (going to see minus the bear with her was prolly the best thing I did all last summer). But besides a few bands in alternative rock and what I can stand of popular metal, we differ from there. She'll listen to anything on the radio (be it rap, r&b, alternative, pop, disco, or whatever), whereas I can't stand even 1/8th of the **** they play. Riding in her truck with her is always such a pain for me since she listens to that crap. But we do tend to dislike a lot of the same things as well too so its a nice trade off.
As for the things I listen to, her reaction is either this is boring (post rock/metal, doom), it sucks (math rock ala DEP), noisy (heh, pretty much everything), or just plain lame. Meh, I dun care. I get sex and rides everywhere since my trucks still dead, so I don't complain to much.
