Do Those Close To You Hate Music You Like?

My moms taste and mine actually sync up every now and again. She and I both have an appreciation for country (though she's more into old-school and I like crossover), RnB (we're both fans of Ne-yo), and alternative rock (3 Doors Down, Goo Goo Dolls). She also likes 10 Years and Staind, so I blast them whenever I get the chance.Beyond that, though, we're opposites. She jams along to Ke$ha and Bruno Mars, and I listen to Evans Blue, Animals As Leaders, and Explosions In The Sky. And my sister loves Beiber and all the other Disney brats.

I like 60s/70s rock generally and prog especially -- Yes über alles. Plus a fair chunk of eighties stuff and some more contemporary bands. I think Florence and the Machine is great too, and in certain moods will throw on Joss Stone.

My wife can't stand any of it. She listens to Taio Cruz and I know not what else. Music to do aerobics to, basically. You can't play the Doors or the Stones around her. We do have some overlap -- she's an old Beatles fan, Duran Duran, and she likes some of the German stuff I listen to or my Better than Ezra album. But it's a pretty thin overlap.

Oldest daughter (15) likes techno/hiphop/pop crap -- Kedollarha, Cascada, and all that. She also likes some pop-punk/emo types like All Time Low, though, also Panic at the Disco, so we have some common ground to listen to.

Next daughter (14) likes the White Stripes and Led Zeppelin. We steal each others' CDs all the time.

My son (12) is still figuring out his own music tastes but seems to be taking most of his cues from me. He likes the Barenaked Ladies, I'm wondering if it's more the music or the name. I played him YYZ driving home from his jazz band practice and he loved it. So there's hope with him.

My last daughter (3) likes the Alphabet Song, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and the Itsy Bitsy Spider. I get my mandolin out for her. She can sing along to a fair chunk of Florence and the Machine too! Today, though, she cried out that she didn't like Daddy's music, she wanted to hear Dynamite. I guess her mother's gotten to her.

All my friends/parents hate sublime, primus, rancid (every single person always makes a comment on how bad the singer is), eminem, sonic youth, rush, yes, black keys, and most rhcp and greenday (they all love the insanely cliche songs).

Maybe I have bad taste in music?

Idk about you but I love and out came the wolves because of the bass primarily and the vocals secondly, not much of a fan of the other albums but god do I love that one

My wife seems to like most of what I listen to...if she doesn't shes never said anything about it. Although whats she listens to on her own is a lot different than what she'll listen to when I'm around.
My closest friends all share the same taste to one degree or another, we're all metal heads, but all seem to prefer our own specific genres more than the other. I pretty much dig anything metal short of the death metal thats just constant hammering on the snare.

My wife and I agree on a few bands/genres, but we disagree on many more. Classic example, just last night: she was channel surfing the TV and the movie "Beat Street" came on, and I was like "yes! Awesome!" After about 5 minutes she changed the channel. :(

I just remembered a funny incident maybe 20 years ago... I was rooming with this couple, the guy is a blues guitarist and the girl is a feminist philosophy major. :) She's got a study group over at the house, and they're intently discussing the ape-like violence and stupidity of the male-dominant paradigm, and my buddy is playing a few songs just for ambiance, and he starts playing "Delia's Gone" by Johnny Cash. A few verses in, he gets a thoughtful look on his face, and changes to a different song. He realized that if his gf started listening to the lyrics, he'd get yelled at, and he wouldn't get "any" for a long time.

Music is such a big part of my life I can't see being really good friends/in a relationship with someone who didn't like good music. Luckily my tastes are very eclectic. I'm a metal head at heart and my two best friends are too, as are two of my lady friends (I don't believe in monogamy). Some of my other good friends like the indie scene (I am in Brooklyn after all), and I enjoy some of that stuff quite a bit.

But amongst people I choose to be close to (so not including family, who are all significantly older and music is not something we discuss), none of them like pop/rap/country. I think the music you like says a lot about your personality. I'm not trying to say bad taste = bad person, but not the kind of person I want to be around.

When you live with women they usually don't like progressive Rock, and heavy rock. Like Hendrix, Yes, Rush, etc ...

My wife and daughter have different tastes in music than I do.
