I can't tell you how many times I've tried to wrap my head around the threshold and ratio settings, but you just explained it better than anything I've read before. (Well, to be clear, you explained it in the way that is most understandable to me...which I'd call "better.")That's what they do, basically, yes. You set a certain threshold. Everything that is louder than this threshold is made less loud. But it is not cutting off directly at the threshold. If you have a peak going over the threshold, it will be reduced to a ratio: A ratio of 4:1 would mean that a peak exceeding the threshold by 4dB would be reduced to 1dB.
As a sound tech, I negotiate with the players to decide who / where we're going to compress, HPF, EQ or whatever. I never just blindly add "stuff" on top of the player's "stuff". As a player I'll raise those discussions with the sound techs.Stage compression plus out front compression, some compression on the compression...
I've met sound engineers who learned by rote, and I've met engineers who learned by experience. I know which I prefer.
You're better off working on your technique then.
I run one all the time because I want my quiet notes to still be heard.
I thought most FOH engineers will put compression on the bass as standard.
