I have a Pur pitcher filter, a habit I got into while living in Norman (worst tap water in the US) and Cape Girardeau (I don't trust the water wasn't coming from the Mississippi River), although I don't exactly trust the Edwards aquifer that much.

While backpacking past the Hetch Hetchy I peed in the reservoir. True story. Sorry.

I wondered how I got giardia from my tap water. :p I used to hike in that area too. There is a beautiful spot about 17 miles from the Pinecrest trail head. It is way of the beaten path and you really have to know how to get there. I have spent a week there and not seen any other hikers. It is also high enough that there are no mosquitos, so I imagine the stream there is pretty pure. But even there we had to filter our water for giardia. I was convinced when a friend who refused to filter had the nasty little critters move in. Those parasites are passed through urine.

I didn't know about the spring you mentioned I will have to look for it. Thanks for that.

When I was a kid, the water here was fantastic. It still may be in some areas. I moved away for 22 years and upon returning, I discovered the water I missed so much and looked forward to had changed. Now it tastes like crud. I have to let my tap run for no less than 3 minutes before the chlorine smell goes away.

I think they bleach it to cover the scent of the dead smiley that got dumped in the well. :hiding:

yes, all day
I do not buy into the scheme of bottled water. even the bottled water came from a tap somewhere.

I think it's the packaging that's a scam. I don't mind paying someone to clean my water, so I buy a filter. I'm not going to pay for them to put it into bottles for me. That's just ridiculous, imo. Just like I'm not going to pay someone for a carton full of purified air. ;)

Get a huge pot, fill it and bring to a boil for 5 minutes. Waaala. You have purified water. I fill our Arrowhead dispenser this way if we are running low.

That only takes care of biological impurities. If you live in an area with coal power plants, meth production, etc., you likely have heavy metals or other toxic chemicals that boiling doesn't take care of. Basic water filters won't get most of these either, which is why I installed a reverse osmosis system for drinking water.

I have a 140 foot well. A couple years ago, the pump's wiring fried. Since the system was about 40 years old, I replaced the pump, wiring, pipe, and pressure tank at a cost of around $2k. I also had a softener installed due to my water's high iron content. The alternative was to shell out a couple grand to hook up to the neighboring city's water supply, which is horrible. I think my money was well-spent.

I drink tap. Some years ago i used a brita filter but i always found it a hassle to refill so i stopped bothering. Right now there's a brita pitcher with water in it in the fridge that's been there for over two years. Why i don't just pour it out and wash it, i'm not sure. Aside from milk, tap water is pretty much all i drink.
