My wife was a concert violinist. She just laauuugggghhhhhsssss at all the talk of how many basses some people say they "need".

and only get this rebuke:Yeah. But at the end of the day he was a collector more than a bass player so he doesn't count. I'm talking about your actual basserists rather than dilettantes and talented amateurs.
I smell troll.
Kumbaya indeed!Well at least I have United everyone! I think these threads are ridiculous. You need 1 bass as much as you need 15 basses. People like to second guess other people's decisions.
I only know how many I need. I have no way of knowing how many someone else needs.
EDIT: I can understand if you're creating very different sounds, like an electric bass with brass wounds and an acoustic with nylon flatwounds, but in the ordinary course of rock 'n' roll......
No one really needs a bass at all. You could just hum the bass part into a vocal mic.
I always had my bass setup before a session. Usually 5 or 6 times a year minimum. In fact, every time I changed strings...So a pro player might want a backup. How often do you need to take your guitar to the shop for tweaking. Once a year and leave it for a day or maybe two? Twice a year. Once every five years?
Don't get me wrong. I've just started playing the bass and I want to have a houseful. I know I can only play one at a time and that some of them will probably get a bit neglected but I still want them. I don't even really know why, but I do.
EDIT: Not "a bit neglected". More likely "unused".
Slapping and popping is easily rendered using conventional vocal techniques (think of beatboxing), but polyphonic vocalisation does indeed need years of training with Tibetan monks, hence my acquired aversion to Yak milk.Humming slap/pop lines or chords authentically would require vocal dexterity I'd pay to witness...
Oh, and I have two now (fretted 5 and 6), gassing for 1-2 more at most. Ok maybe 3.
