Do You Ever Break Strings??

Love this!! Haha, I'm breaking a string about once every three or four months, which is good because it's a reminder to get fresh strings on! It's all in enthusiasm and plucking technique, (for better or worse). Playing heavier music with fingers, I like to accentuate certain notes by plucking down into the bass body, the string slaps off of the fretboard and gets a killer tone through an overdriven tube amp (Steve Harris plucks like this a lot). My singer calls it the "gank", gankin' on the strings to get that dirt! Gankin' the soul right out of the strings!

Love playing hard, fast and heavy!
Steve Harris plays extremely lightly but with super low action.

When you play telephone wire action you have to gank it hard to get that fretboard clap :p
i hear you :) my action used to be sky high, because i wanted the fretbuzz sometimes; not all the time, and i played super hard, with inflexible picks, with the biggest strings i could find. i now play lightly, with fingers, as low as i can without the string choking out when i dig in (which i would have thought was "ultra light touch" ) back in the day :D

have not broken a string since i started back up @ 6 years ago.

I have only ever broken a string once while playing. It was a lighter set of Slinkys and I snapped the G while slapping. That was 15 years ago and it hasn't happened since.
I had the inner core of a Circle K .140 break at the peg after I had unwound and rewound it too many times. That's my fault and not the string's.
My strings usually take months to "die" as well. Most of the time the croak from being exposed to high temps in a case before they die from me playing. I'm pretty lucky with strings.

I've never broken a bass string in 23 years of playing. I have a pretty heavy right hand and sometimes hit it extra hard for intentional fret buzz as well. I rarely use a pick or slap though. I've broken A lot of guitar strings though, but none since probably 2000ish.

I have never, ever, broken a bass string---and I've been playing since 1981.

o_O What are you doing to your bass that causes strings to break? ;)
Neither have I, and I've been playing since 1978. Typically that would be a faulty string or burr on the witness point at the bridge that would cause that.

Only strings I ever broke were GHS Bass Boomers that had been in the package for about a decade before I installed them... I simply installed them, brought them up to pitch, checked intonation, played for about 10 minutes and POW, string broke. Happened twice. Since then I switched to D'Addarios and have been break free.
