The flat black guard looks a little flat for me on a flat color like CAR. I have this cheap mexican flame maple jazz with the flat black guard bc the blue is so busy. So i like to balance things that way.

And really the only reason i was leaning towards the black pearl as opposed to white is the black is more metal, lol.

If you really want blocks, look for one of the 50th anniversary CAR Jazzes from several years back, it had blocks and no binding, but had a rosewood board.

IMO, either one would look great. Blocks or dots.

I guess if it were me, I'd go dots because the blocks kind of cover up a lot of the fret board. An aesthetic thing for me.

I like it. If you can't get a neck with blocks from the mod shop, you could always get black pearl stickers. That would be a non-destructive way to get the look you want, and for cheap. You'd likely be the only person who'd know they weren't actual black pearl inlays.

Real easy to fake blocks with stickers.

I had the P-bass version of this, was one of my favorite looks. The red/black/maple looks tough!

I don't personally dig it, but I don't think it looks horrendous or anything. I agree that the mod shop seems rather limited.

I try to like big inlays on a neck, but like binding, I’ve seen too many otherwise nice basses with cracked, crooked, or missing chunks of binding, and blocks with chunks knocked out, cracked, discolored, or whole blocks missing.
I prefer the simplicity of a plain fingerboard, but it’s not something you find on many basses. Since I prefer Fender J basses with dark fingerboards, i simply accept I’m going to get dots no matter what, but given a choice I’ll pass on bound and/or blocked necks every time. The exception is if it’s potential flip fodder. In that case I don’t really care as long as it’s all there, in reasonably good shape, and not monkey puke green.

I'm not a fan of black pearl, but I love the red / black / maple look. I had a variation on it a while ago (trans red / black burst, maple neck) that I foolishly sold. Sort of kick myself to this day.

Here's a beautiful Tokai Jazz Sounds in Candy Red with no pickguard from the factory. Still retains the jazz bass control plate, which I think is cool.

You could spec a body with no pickguard from Warmoth and add either a Fender or Warmoth maple neck.

Yeah, looks good. You should be able to find a luthier that could do the blocks for you? When I built my bass I did small blocks and it was pretty easy. But I did the inlays before I installed the frets. I'm guessing it would be harder w/frets?
