And knowing/memorizing a bunch of clever specific techniques with fancy names won't make you a good cook either, if the dishes and meals you end up with are totally unappetizing or taste foul.

Which goes back to the initial point...if you can "read", i.e. read and comprehend what one reads, then you can cook.

yes, i can cook quite well when i put my mind to it. i lived with a guy at uni who was workign in 1* restaurant in london, he taught me some tricks.

i think that everyone who claims to enjoy food should be able to cook.

I am pretty sure God had a smoker and an iron pit installed in Heaven just for my Daddy to use. After all, his barbequed chicken was heavenly!!!

My brother's a chef, my mom's a caterer and my uncle owns a fine foods/wine store. I'd be an outcast in my own family if I couldn't cook.

It's a nice way to impress a woman without looking like you are trying to impress her.
