Do you like covers on your bass?

I've really like the look of covers on a P bass, but I've never played with them on since I always play with a pick. But recently I've been trying to hone my finger skills and I'm loving it. So I decided to order some covers for my P bass! (Oh, tort and flats of course.)

I'd like to see your basses with covers as well.

Depend on the bass. Some really do benefit from having one for aesthetic reason IMO

If a PG covers the routing, then yes. If not no. I don't play with a pick.

OP appears to mean pickup cover and bridge cover.

All that chrome is a cool look, but I've never had them. I would probably find a pickup cover to unnecessarily limit where I can pluck the strings. A bridge cover with the foam mute would be cool for some songs, not so good for others.

To me this is a case of form following function. There is no appreciable functional merit to pickup or bridge covers. In fact, both are restrictive. Since I know what a nuisance they are from a playing perspective the visual produces and equally negative response.

My first bass (a Rick 4001) had the bridge pickup cover. Sold it in 1981. Since then, not a single cover on any of my basses.

I've always liked the look..grew up a big Marcus Miller and Will Lee fan..don't know if it was a NYC session guy thing, but I always liked the look of the neck pickup cover only on and don't find it too restrictive to play with...I think the. Ridge cover is sweet too, but I'd never play with it on..not enough real estate left with both on...it stays on My Postmodern bass , but I plan on taking it of from time to time just for purely a different look...

The early bridge covers worked as a mute, and some people use the pup cover as a thumb rest. Other than that, they are nothing but a PIA.

But they look great for the vintage look.

Never had a bass that came with them.
Not one for vintage looks.
They seem to restrict a lot of plucking area though.

I love the look of a Jazz with covers, but for me, they impede string access a bit too much. However, a Precision is a completely different story.

I love the look but hate playing with them on. It's just uncomfortable for me.

First thing I did on my brand new 77 J bass was remove the covers. Likely because I saw a picture of some player with the covers removed - but more because the covers blocked the most comfortable places for me to use my fingers to play. It always puzzled me that Marcus Miller keeps his neck p'up cover on - I use that spot... but he's Marcus, so I'm sure he's got a good reason!
