Funny enough, I just put my cover back on my 4003 this morning. I love it.
I have to disagree on your no function comment. On a P, I agree. Its right where my fingers want to be, so it's gotta go. On a Rick, it's a great rest for me when digging into bridge territory. I suppose we can just call it subjective. Totally functional to me in that case.
kinda like the look ... but just can't play with them on ..!!
I play a lot of older blues, Americana, R&B music so the look of them works for me. Especially on my jazz bass having the bridge muted is often the tone I'm looking for.
No covers for me. I guess my Ripper had one when new, but I don't think it was still on the bass when I got it in '83. If it were, I would have taken it off right away. I've played guitar as long as I've played bass and have always done some pick playing with both instruments, so the cover would totally be in the way.

I love the look of both pickup and bridge covers. Chrome, baby! It's beautiful, like a '55 Chrysler.
Unfortunately, I cut my teeth on a P-Bass with no covers, so I got used to anchoring my thumb on, and plucking right over, the pickups and palm muting at the bridge.

100% with @DigitalMan. If it serves no function, I'd rather it not be on whatever I'm playing.
Note: I place a lot of value on the varieties of tone you can get by moving you non-fretting hand position around. Anything that gets in the way in the area between the neck and the bridge is a major turn off for me.

I love they way they look, but on a Fender, they're just too inconvenient. In the past, when I was playing Rick 4001s and 4003s, I left them on just because they weren't in the way enough for me to bother taking them off.
I usually play just behind the pickup so I think I'll be OK. And yes the i love the look as well
Golly, all these years I've never played a bass with one of those things on it. I do play in a cover band, though. 
I always thought the pickup cover was classy, but not so much the bridge cover although it's a bit lopsided with just the pup cover.
I don't currently have one, but I've thought a few times about picking up something cheap from Ebay and doing it.

Yes they can get in they way, and none of mine are still on but for some reason I can't take the one off this bass. Weirds me out when it's not there...but just this one.
