I imagine that those pickup and bridge covers on a bass are like heels for a woman. They look nice, but are a PITA.
I like to use the pickup as a thumbrest, so obviously I would say no.
Unless I can find a gold one...

I like em, too. Just the other day, I scored an inexpensive, used pickup cover for my 79 P. I freakin love it; looks spectacular, and so far I like using it as a thumb rest when necessary. The true test will be when I take it to practice this week.
I've been itching to throw a "F" bridge cover on a recently acquired 2001 MIM Jazz since I play above the neck pickup with fingers and pick between the neck pup and neck with, well, a pick.
Midnight Wine/RW fretboard/White pg.... might even throw a creme or parchment pg on the bass come to think of it.

I know it's placing form over function but I like them on some of my vintage basses - just feel like they are more complete and as intended.

I dont care about looks, sometimes it looks cool to me, others not. Just personally cant play with it in the way. If im playing finger style, I rest my thumb on the pick up, no matter what kind of pup. and if im playing with a pick, its right in the way too. so its a matter of string access for me.
quick side question, the little piece on those that looks like a thumb rest, although too far forward for it, from what ive read is some kind of anti vibration thing? and why is it on the upper side of the bass sometimes, and somtimes lower. What vibrations was it to cure? the pick guard? I notice its vintage too like the covers?
First thing I do when I buy a bass with covers is to take it or them off, they look cool but get in the way. I own Ricks, Fenders and a Gibson and none of them have covers on. In fact it was rare to see anyone with a cover still on their bass until the last ten or twenty years. Taking them off was the thing you did when you bought a new bass.

Like it on my PJ. I still am able to palm mute, just in front of the cover, and it is also a great rest for pick playing.

I believe you are referring to tug bar/ thumb rest depending on its location.
I do about 30% my gigs with my ashtrays on my Jazz bass. I play a lot of music written in the 50's & 60's and most of the guys back then we're using them. As I'm somewhat trying to emulate the feel, style and vibe of the music, I feel there is a functional advantage to them being on the bass. Rock &Roll night, get them out of the way.
Love the look. Don't want the extra holes to add them if I end up taking them off. If they had an invisible mounting I'd have them to throw on too look cool.
Can anyone clarify whether these are two different styles of P covers? One seems more flat on top, while the other seems to have more of a curve....
I love a bridge cover...one of the first things I did with my Precison was throw a gold one on. Not too crazy about pickup covers though- I tend to play over the pickup mostly.
