Do you name your basses?

I named all my basses. My five string Stingray I bought first when I got back into it after a several years hiatus. I named her Anna, short for anthropomorphism, which encompasses the act of assigning a human name to a inanimate object. I then bought a four string Stingray, and named her Rihanna, because I re-ordered the same brand of bass, and I re-anthropomorphized. Then when I bought my Squire Classic Vibe 50’s style P-bass, I named her Tihanna, since she was the third.

I only name them when it seems to fit the look of the instrument. I have a Les Paul BFG I’ve knighted as “Brutus”, just because it looks the part. Sometimes I refer to my 6 string b-416 as the paddle, but that’s it so far. 5 bass guitars and 7 electric guitars, only one officially named so far. Don’t force em, they’ll come to you. Or they won’t. Cheers!

Shouldn’t it have been Tri-Anna?

Mmm... I'm guessing, no offense, that the "hobbyist" bass players are into naming their instruments. My basses are tools. If one goes south, I can get a new one. Not a big deal.

I don't think that's the case here - hobbyist or pro, I think it comes down to a person's particular brand of whimsy on whether or not they're naming their basses.

Yes, but only the ones I know I'll keep long term. I think it really comes down to attachment. Some players view their basses as merely tools like a carpenter's hammer. Others like myself, get attached and see their instruments as friends and companions on the Path of Music.
