Do you name your basses?

Left to right. “Grandpa” “papa Smurf” and “old school”
View attachment 3558224

Grandpa is a metalocalypse reference. There was an episode where they referred to acoustic guitars as “grandpas” guitars.

Papa Smurf is in honor of my dad who passed away. He had a thing for everything blue. He even had blue bulbs in his porch lights. So my brothers and I would joking refer to him as papa Smurf.

Old school is really just because a fender jazz like a fender p in sunburst with tort is a classic look imo.
Wow I like Papa Smurf. Is that a Dingwall?

I call my Jack Casady Sig bass “The Jack”. I call an Epiphone an “Epi” but it bothers me when people call a Gibson a “Gibby” and an Ibanez an “Ibby”. I’m not sure why, it just does.

I know what you mean. I hate it when people call pickups "pups" !! Not a big deal and the real problem is inside my head lol.

All my Basses have names. I have an upright named J-Lo because her butt is so big it is hard to get the bag on her. My other upright is Bess, after Bessie Smith. She has a dark and bluesy character to her sound as did the amazing Ms. Smith. One of my electrics is called, “The Mood Bass” because, similar to the old mood rings, her paint changes color in the light, from deep emerald green w/gold metal flakes, to purple with silver metal flakes. Last but not least my big green electric is Named Nessie The Loch Ness Monster. Not only is the color apropos, but for Southpark Fans Who need a chuckle, she , “....cost me.tree fiddy.”

One day riding in the car, my granddaughter made up a tune called “Honeyshiner”. That week I received this Sadowsky bass. It’s now affectionately called “Honeyshiner”.

Heavily modified '76 Fender Jazz is Josey, because Josey wails. '80's Spector NS2 is Ronnie, in homage to Ronnie Specter. Schector Stiletto was named by former owner, Bertha, it fits. Sire M7 fretless is Maggie, after my mom. Washburn AB20 acoustic is Michelle, cause sh's pretty, like a few Michelles I have known. 7 string Wolf has not expressed herself to me enough to name.
