Do you name your pets weird names?

My 45 yr old son has a little dog that he got a couple of years ago. And, it has an official name. But, for some reason or another, I call his dog by the name, Dawg-Dawg.

I don't know why. I just do.

We've been a dog family - those that came to us pre-named usually got to keep those names. We figured they'd already been through enough trauma.

The one exception was a Shepherd mix pup we got through a rescue group whom they'd named "Jake". He just wasn't a "Jake". My then-5-year-old son named him "Ranger", after the baseball team.

Otherwise, we'd try to wait until a name came to us that seemed to match their personalities. Grace was a Doberman who was anything but graceful, Birdie, our current Dutchy rescue, is short for s***bird.

Hilda was another Dobe whom the rescue group named - they were running out of names and were going through staff member's elementary school teacher names.

We named a Shepherd-Rottie mix we had when we were first married "Monroe". It was not pronounced Mon-ROE like you'd think, rather it was MUN-roe, like locals pronounce the town in N. Louisiana (my family's from all over Louisiana). Turned out to be the most perfect, fitting name for him - such a lovable goof.

Our current Rottie came pre-chipped through a rescue group as "Jacqueline" - She's "Jacki", sometimes "Thang", or "Thang-Ray" or "Thang-Ranion" - She and MON-Roe would've gotten along great.

Our Belgian Malinois was dumped the next street over - neighbor's called her "Shady" because she had a particular oak tree up on a hill she liked to sit under and watch the whole block. When we finally got her corralled and rescued, the name just stuck - she's kind of shady. Plus, the neighbors already know her name, so it keeps things simple on walks.

May I put a face with a few of these names?

My wife is deathly allergic to cats and gets spooked by dogs. So, no pets. Although we did have fish for a while. They didn't have names.

We did have a cat early on. He was a perfectly symmetrical tuxedo, and when he was a tiny kitten, probably just weaned, he came through a window and picked out my wife as his human. She was so charmed that she tolerated the allergies. He had been adopted by a guy next door, who couldn't spell closet, let alone be in it. He worked in a bakery that made chocolate body parts. He thought the kitten was female and had named him Serena. He also decided that Serena had picked my wife and that was the end of that. So, we had a cat. I'm from a rural area and knew immediately that Serena was actually a boy. My very proper English wife, without cracking a smile, said that we should call him Dick. That way nobody would ever mistake him for a girl. He was Dick The Cat after that. He lived about four years as an indoor and outdoor cat. Feline leukemia got him when we couldn't take him to the vet for shots for a while. He was a very polite cat. He didn't make messes, picked out one place to shed, stayed off countertops, didn't knock anything over, didn't go upstairs, and was all around the perfect cat. Almost 35 years later, I miss Dick The Cat.
