I don't own one, but I work on one in the summer. I've worked as a deckhand for about five years now. My conclusions. I'm glad I don't own one. They are a huge money pit.

I grew up with family boats. Now I have something better than a boat - friends with boats! After all, I live in Annapolis.

I will second the friends with boats scheme. I have a buddy who lives in Sunset Cliffs, San Diego. We use his boat to go surf the southern reefs that are only accessible by boat.

Used to have a 20' Key West that we used for tubing, wakeboarding, and general cruising around. After a while, we stopped getting enough use out of it to make all the upkeep worth it, so we sold that for a jet ski, which is much more fun and much less hassle.

Sure the newer boats have a nicer wake but they don't have the character of this one.

Ha, you think people are picky here about tone woods, fretboard materials, neck shape etc?

You should see the people in the waterski world. Moving the fin on the back of the ski 0.001" of an inch, trying different skis, ropes. Moving their bindings different amounts forwards or back. The debate about rubber or hardshell bindings.

I have some pics somewhere, maybe tomorrow. Definitely not for the faint of heart financially, it takes commitment. Just like playin' the bass...
