In the case is always safer.
I put my main bass in it's case each and every time I am done playing it. I also have a five instrument stand that I have a couple of basses and a few guitars. I feel they are fine on the stand because they are not as good as my main bass.

Out of 23 basses (yeah, I know; too many. So sue me...
) I have two that live on stands, next to my rig; these two. The rest get rotated out of their cases onto 3 other stands, for their month of being tweeked/tuned/played. Then they get wiped down and go back into their cases...
My only really nice player stands at home next to the rig that's ready to power up, sometimes several times per day.

Basses that I don't regularly play stay in their cases until I get the urge to play them. Then I wipe them down and banish them back to their case.
Number 1 stays on the futon so we can watch TV together with my Strat.
On gigs I use Quick-Lok, A-Frame type stands, and the futon stays at home.
My bass doubles as a cat scratching post. Not only have I saved $15, my bass is getting the relic mojo for free.

I think that's a completely individual thing.
If there are 3 wild kids and 2 puppies in the house, or I lived in a dorm... I'd put it in a case.
Living alone or with people one trusts.... the easier access of a stand is my preference.
A bass can get scratched just as easily getting put into a case as it can getting put on a stand.
It also depends on how meticulous someone is about their instrument. If they're the type that polishes it regularly, doesn't want fingerprints or dust on it, yada yada... the right choice is obvious.

All of my basses are hanging on the wall. With two young boys, a stand would be a disaster. If I had to retrieve them from a case, my playing time would nosedive.
Back up stays in the gig bag when I'm not playing it. My main on a stand, plugged in and ready.
I keep it on a stand, I've had more little knocks and scratches pulling it in or out of a hard/soft cases than most else. I've got a wide horsehair basting brush I give it a sweep down with if it gets a little dusty, better than a cloth for light stuff.
If I can’t see ‘em I am less likely to play ‘em.

Do what makes sense in your individual situation. Not everyone has a practice room, secure living accommodations, or available wall space to keep them on display.

I don't have a case for each instrument. Some hang on the wall, some are in gig bags, some in cases, and some on stands.
No kids to mess with my stuff. Cat couldn't care less about musical instruments, except the rat fur covered cabs. He loves those. Luckily for both of us, he hasn't taken to scratching them. My dog will cautiously approach a bass/guitar on a stand but she's mostly afraid of them.

A case is a minor PITA since it has to be laid flat to retrieve or store the bass. I use top quality, highly protective gig bags that are leaning against the wall and can be unzipped in 5 seconds....I leave the bass on a stand only if I know I'm likely to be playing it again within a couple of hours. If I'm not sure.....it gets re-bagged.
No kids, and the cats don't care, so whichever one I'm planning to use next on a gig is on a stand, the other one is in its case. On a gig, I just leave it on the stand. Nobody's ever tried to mess with it--even if I'm away from the bandstand, there's always at least one of us who's keeping an eye out.
This. leaving a bass out in the open leaves is susceptible to being knocked over, getting some liquid spilled on it, etc... any number of things can happen.
I have a bass in the living room, bedroom and the spare room,all on stands. I love looking at them and having them ready to play on a whim. Kids are grown and the cat doesn't mess with them.

On a stand, with my stage hat over the headstock to stop the dust. The others are right there on the wall, nothing in a case
At home and at practice, they're in a stand for easy access.
At the gigs, they're in the case when I'm not playing them.
