Having a colletion of Peavey Cirrus basses that were all made the same month with the only difference being the wood and finishes, it does appear that a hard coated finishes (Tiger Eye, Red Oak) have a brighter and less warm tone that the ones with satin finishes (Walnut, Bubinga). With all things the same (including strings) I can hear a subtle difference. Maybe that means something, maybe it doesn't but that is my experience. YMMV.
