Do you use a ramp on your main player?

Whatever works for you I guess. I know relatively few players that use a ramp. But all of the ones I do know tend to seriously overplay IMO. All of them.

Is that something having a ramp encourages?

Ramps force the right hand to play extremely fast. You actually have to remove them if you need to play Sweet Home Mustang Sally.

There is no technical equivalent that you can build yourself up to that takes the place of a ramp. It's like tapping your fingers quickly in the air; no matter how much you practice it, you will never be able to get your fingers to stop at the exact same spot in midair at all times.

The lighter attack a ramp can allow is just the tertiary reason I use them; they give a constant stopping point for those of us who pluck with freestrokes, and a completely consistent depth that helps when plucking with four fingers.

And if anyone thinks their technique is more on point than Hadrien Feraud, Gary Willis, and Matt Garrison, I'd love to see them demonstrate that

I personally don't have ramps on my basses, but just an observation- ramp threads bring out irrational hate and arrogant self righteous posturing by non ramp users, every damn time. Even Damien Erkine, in his no Treble article on ramps, had to step in the comment section and attitude check the haters.

Every person in America 150 years ago got by just fine traveling from New York to California on a horse. Does that mean it's what you're going to do, or are you going to see if there's an easier or better route? Again, ramps aren't for everyone. But not believing that they do make things better and easier for certain people in a way that you aren't going to get without them is simply a matter of ego or delusion.

I think framing a gadgety device using the massive transformation in transportation technology over the past century and a half is a little overstating things. And for the record my train would have kicked your horse's butt on that journey.

I think framing a gadgety device using the massive transformation in transportation technology over the past century and a half is a little overstating things. And for the record my train would have kicked your horse's butt on that journey.

If you wanted to take that train 150 years ago, you'd be sitting in your seat for a while waiting for the rail to be finished The size of the ogre the is irrelevant- I used it as a glaringly obvious example of how silly the "x was good enough for y so z shouldn't need it" mindset is. Cell phones, indoor plumbing, air conditioning- there are countless things that people got by just fine with in the past that we wouldn't want to give up now, but people still use that same flawed thinking to dismiss things they don't want to open their mind to here. Basses with more than 4 strings or 21 frets, effects- we see the same tired analogy here all the time.

Except we both know you didn't say just that without adding a caveat afterwards that insulted those who use ramps. And it's certainly a matter of what works for you. It is not a matter of opinion if it provides an improvement that can't be achieved without a ramp for me or many other people- it's a fact. You're welcome to have the opinion that it really doesn't help us in this way, just as you're welcome to have the opinion that the earth is flat and moon is made of cheese. Both of those opinions have the same amount of truth to them

Jamerson also stubbornly used ONE finger to pluck strings when he played. Yeah he did "What's Going On?" using one finger to pluck, lying on his back, AND hungover...so what's your point there? Idk about others, but I'll keep on using two or three fingers to pluck regardless of what Mr. Jamerson did.

And for the record, I do not own or use ramps on any of my basses. I have many players that I admire who DO use them though, so I can't exactly say I don't respect people who do use them. To me it's the same as having a thumbrest or a foam mute (as opposed to palm muting) on your bass. Just another tool of the trade.

Assuming 150 years is an approximation - but yes for some parts of the trip I was early by about three years.

again what ever works.. although I doubt very much a ramp will make you or anybody a better player.. it mite help make it more comfortable or easier to play certain lines but one should learn the proper techniques and not rely on some peace of wood in between your pick ups to be a better player.

I was intrigued by ramps so I had one made for my Ken Smith. I found it didn't really make any difference. I play with a light right hand touch and I'm constantly moving my thumb around so the extra anchoring area wasn't a plus.

I've made and use two different styles, full ramp and a mini-bridge. I like both.
