I keep hearing you don't need a compressor with an active bass because it already compresses the sound.

I always used a compressor with my passive Fender. The Cali76 CB was my favourite. But it felt or sounded off when I moved to an active bass. Might've been that specific compressor and not compression, though...
I can see that. I’d probably be playing with thresholds & ratios to best accommodate the voicing of a particular instrument. Still have the 76?
