Man, I used to prop the lids every Saturday night 'til the wee hours, sufferin' through infernal infomercials, to watch Baker's Doctor battle Cybermen, Daleks and the Master! I didn't think anyone could match Baker, but Eccleston and Tenant did a great job.

I have two favs -- The Tom Baker years were when I first watched on PBS at my folks house. But with the "new" version I'd have to say that David Tennant has been my fav, though Matt Smith is really growing on me. I can't see Chris Ecclestone w/o thinking of him in Gone in 60 Seconds, or 28 Days Later -- both characters being nasty. I liked Rose. But...Amy Pond is the Bee's Knees dressed in the Cat's Pajamas, and I don't even like redheads.
New Whovian here! I've only watched from the 9th Doctor onward (currently don't pla non watching the older seasons, sorry!). I don't dislike Matt Smith butt I REALLY dug Eccelston and Tennant. As far as the companions go Rose was easily the weakest (in terms of how capable she was not what she added to the story), though she was still a fun character. Don't really have a favorite to be honest, I kinda like everyone.
I'm showing my age here but I remember hiding behind the couch when the Daleks first showed up for the first Doctor!
I'll also admit to hiding behind the couch when The Munsters first showed on British tv. What can I say, I was a sensitive kid!

Of COURSE Tom Baker was the best Doctor, as he sort of ended up defining the role, but the last three have all been excellent. Eccleston was fantastic, Tennant was every bit as good, and I was all set to be disappointed by Matt Smith, only to be disappointed at not being able to be disappointed.

When Baker was on(late night PBS), he was my favorite. Then Eccleston did a great job and I would have said he was the best but after only 1 season, it was hard to miss him when he was gone. I think Tennant really made the character his own and that was fantastic. I was worried when he left. Smith, however, has again redefined the character and it's odd to go back and watch the Tennant episodes.
As for companions on the new series, I thought Rose was good, and the romantic thing w/ the Doctor made for some good stories, it was a bit cliche and you knew it had to come to an end so I was always looking for that.
I definitely preferred Martha and I wish she had stayed around longer. Donna was fun, but in real life, she would be the most annoying person ever. Amy is too much of a damsel in distress. I do like redheads tho. Particularly spunky ones in miniskirts and boots.

The thing about the companions is that their "capability" is not really the point. If anything, when they ARE capable and it starts becoming the "Tardis super-team," it throws the dynamic of the series off kilter, IMO. Anyone remember the late Tom Baker seasons, when he had first Adric the annoying math genius and then Romana, the OTHER renegade Time Lord (or Lady, I suppose...)?
The doctor is supposed to be alien, weird, and unpredictable. The companions anchor him to the rest of the universe and, by being the ones who ask questions, are supposed to enable the audience to follow what's going on. Of course, when they have no personality or skills they get reduced to mere damsels in distress. But on the whole, their real role is to humanize the series, so the more ordinary they are, the better.
But then, come to think of it, I loved Leela. She could kick ***. But then she was also a caveman so she contributed twice as many questions to make the doctor explain things simply.
Started watching on PBS at the end of Pertwee (lol about those floppy faints) but really consider T. Baker as my fave. Met Collin Baker at a con years ago (just at the end of Peter Davison's run). I've been watching the "New" series with my kids "are you my mummy." Liked the reviaval of K9 and Sarah Jane however brief it was. My kids think (as do I) that Rose is a poor choice of companion.
Colin Baker is actually one of my favorites, despite his reputation as 'the unlikeable Doctor'.

I read that he really didn't like the outfit. He felt that the doctor should be a darker character. They also cut his version's budget quite a bit and he felt that the stories and effects sufferred for that. BBC wanted their way in making the doctor clownish and they got their way.
There was a version of his costume later that was still patchwork but in darker colors. Much more effective.
I love Chris Eccelston's Doctor. I felt the doctor should be messed up and angry and have his wacky madness be a front that often cracks. I do like the humor of the 2 following Doctors, but I don't want it to stray too far from his sadness. I think that is what makes the character interesting and more believable. You need to empathize with him and understand his laughter is the only medicine that he has.
Oh crap. I've become a geek.
He didn't like the outfit, or the way they wanted him to play the character.
Which is half the reason I'm no impressed with his version. Any actor can pull off a role if it's what they want, but he was able to be excellent in a role that he didn't like.
Imagine how much better he could've done had they let him do it the way he wanted to!

I wasn't aware we ever disagreed.
The whole "are you my mummy" two-parter was perhaps my favorite episode of the entire series. That was some imaginative TV there.
Rory's character totally changed at the end of series 5 with the whole "last centurion" thing - pretty much all the way through series 6 he's been far more assertive and heroic (the beginning of "Let's Kill Hitler" springs to mind) although elements of the bumbling, hen-pecked Rory of old remain.
It's a shame we're going to be seeing the last of the Ponds this year.
Still, roll on the Christmas Special and Clara... let's see what kind of companion she is.

I actually liked that change in Rory as well. He's finally become a likable character to me and now he'll be gone.
And Amy....stunning girl and good character but I'm still split between Rose and Martha. Donna...she had a few good moments as well but I kind of found her annoying at times. It's almost as though the character was being "over-acted". meh, I dunno maybe it's just my pickiness.
