I just picked up a circa 1984 DOD FX25, today. I compared it to another used DOD envelope filter with three knobs which didn't have as much "slurp" to it and didn't sound as "extreme" as I wanted. The FX25 is pretty sensitive to knob twirling, there are some bad sounds in it, and there could be a bit of a volume issue. However, one can dial in a Mutron-Like wet sound, which is what I was looking for.
My advice is that one can never have too many filters! Each filter sounds different and has a different way of dialing in the sounds. Even though I have the well-designed, natural-sounding, versatile and a joy to use 3Leaf Groove Regulator, the wild and spacey Subdecay Prometheus, and the vintage Korg G5 Bass Synth (with an envelope filter in it), I still found myself wanting a couple of the sounds I was able to get from the FX25.
Depending upon the condition, I believe these can be picked up anywhere from around $40 to $80. I'd recommend acquiring only the version with two knobs. There's one version with solid green paint (early), and another version with green metallic paint.
I had a second generation FX25 and the pedal that got the closest to my favourite rubbery sound was the Subdecay Prometheus. It obviously does a whole lot more though.
I have most of the fx25's and a prometheus as well, and I agree that the Prometheus's character somewhat resembles the fx25- in some settings it does that airy thing at the top of the sweep like an fx25 with too hot of a signal, but can also be tailored for lots of other shapes and sounds. Ive used a few different varieties of filters and the Prometheus comes closest, though tamer without the big bottom drop's and not as thick. Great filter though, and would be a good choice if you wanted something reminiscent of the fx25 that was tamer with good tweakability.
