Like I said before control the head, control the dog. A slip leash in place of his collar works much better than a prong collar. Position it under the dogs jaw and right behind his ears, when he tries to run or pull, just gently pull upward.
My brother has a 110 pound American bulldog that goes after cats or squirrels or any other small non dog animal. I used this method on him when he tried to take off, and he stopped in his tracks and sat down.
