Main rig: I run in both stereo (effects / non effects) AND tri-amped (sometimes with a BFM sub, sometimes not). Oh, my effects board is in stereo as well (L and R channel). Oh, I also side-chain a rackmount unit (mix as needed). BUT... and this is a rather large, soulful, sweet 'but': My favorite tone ever? Bass - 300w tube amp (NO EQ, just power amp) - Bag End S15B-D. ~Fin.

After a long time of experimenting, I have found in the past year or so that I sound best plugged straight in to the clean channel of my amp. The only other thing that might go in front of that is a pedal tuner. In the situations where an amp isn't the best option I'll plug straight in to a Sansamp VT as a DI to the PA system. I really find that less in more in terms of my tone.

I have an EQ to adjust the volume and tone of my upright to where it's in line with my electric. Does that count as no nonsense? Because I really want to be part of the No Nonsense Club!

Cool. Thanks. I was at GC the other day and played a P bass through a 200 watt Orange all tube head and GK neo 4x10. I was like HOLY CRAP, there's the tone! Now, I just need a bigger vehicle and a roadie and I would be all set.

I have played through that at GC. You're right it really sounds good. I like that the head has minimal knobs, just straight guitar to speakers almost.

Yes. Bass-cord-amp has always seemed like a winning combination. I experimented with a few pedals years ago, but I always wound up going back to bare bones.

I'm plug and play. I go to a lot of jams and so far have not seen any bass player using effects. Maybe they do if playing with their own band. I come back from
these jams and a lot of times want to buy the amp and head I used. I fell in love with a Bag End cab and Epifani Piccolo head last week.
