Does anybody just plug and play anymore?

Yep, all the time actually except when I'm recording. I record DI so I use a Behringer BDI21 for that.

Man... I once made the mistake of admitting that I don't use pedals in a thread and immediately, the effects enthusiasts appeared and started acting like I shoved their grandmother or something. Definitely a forum that I avoid entirely now.

Obviously I have no idea what you posted, but the posts which I have seen in the effects forum which set off the firestorms don't just say they don't use pedals, but also pass judgment on those that do.

I don't use pedals live, although I have more than I will admit to. However, I'm never judgmental of those who see things differently. Nothing sets me off like someone saying that nobody needs pedals, flats, 6 strings, tube amps, cabinets, charts, etc.

I don't own any effects pedals.....and don't plan to.

I do have a SansAmp .....but 90% of the time I'm not using it. It has overdrive/distort on it........never used that effect ever...

I often plug and play in practice, but there are just a few songs we play at gigs which are drop tuned either a half or whole step, so I use a Digitech Drop with my 4 string basses (I own no 5 string basses).

If I was always using a tube amp pushed loud I would, since I dont, I always use a compressor to get that feel.

I have a pedaltrain novo24 full of effects. 80% of the time I'm running the bass clean. To me effects are like tools. you may need them or you may not. It's nice that they are available if you do need them. I never understood the hardcore stance from either the effect gurus, or the BCA guys. To each his own.
use 'em if you got them or don't who cares. there's incredible music/bass lines made using a ton of effects and also with no effects.

I feel like to get a real Grindy, cranky metal tone you need a sansamp or a darkglass and a compressor. I'd be using a compressor no matter what I was playing actually.

I know most bassists are totally dubious about a 100 watt head being able to handle loud rock gigs, but not only can it handle it, for most of our small and medium sized bar gigs I use the 100T in 25 watt mode, and it absolutely kills! So now here I am 62 years old, and all the kids have their little 2 pound 5000 watt class D amps with every effect known to man built in that you can fiddle with using your iPhone, while I'm lugging my 60 pound tube head around. But I've finally got the sound I always wanted.

It's funny I have seen the opposite, most younger players are into Fenders, Rics, and Stingrays through tube amps and the older players are normally the ones with class d heads, boutique cabs, and boutique basses. I'm somewhere in the middle, I love my svt but when it comes time to load up I usually grab my th500 and Genz Benz cab. As far as plug and play, that was my method for years but with my current band I like to have a few more options.

I've tried various pedals over the years but I've never kept any around...always prefer the tone with only a cord between the bass and amp.
