My main rig is a $90 Dukane tube PA head through a $40 1x15 cab. I play out regularly. Old school tone that just kills. Pawn shops are your friend ! :D

First rig was a used tuck & roll Kustom 200 in the late 1970's. Matching 2-15" cabinet with round chrome ports & furniture casters. Was the only thing in my price range loud enough to compete with 2 guitards and a drummer (until one of them got a Fender Dual Showman, ridiculously loud). Best thing about that head was the 20-foot long power cable.
In the late 1980's and all of the 1990's I made do with a biamped rig consisting of a used Peavey TNT130 1-15" combo on the bottom and a Peavey Minx 1-10" on top. Had that thing dialed in.

My third rig was a new Kustom tuck & roll. It wasn't so sucky. There was big leap to Sunn prices. The cabs were much better with a Marshall or Hiwatt head on them as the Kustom ran out of steam even with two cabs. In fact two of those cabs with a 100w Marshall Super Lead or Super Bass and an actual '57 P-Bass with Rotosounds were pretty slamming.

My rig when I was 16 was either a Yamaha 30w/1x15" combo, or a Peavey DeltaBass + early 80's Peavey 2x15". My rig now: still the Yamaha 30w, but it occasionally powers two Bill Fitzmaurice Omni10.5's.

In the shop is a Sceptre Dual Bass Marauder (70's Canadian tube amp, ~90w), and I'm looking into getting a Traynor TC808 sometime in the next year.

Think about the original post....16 years old & no job. Heck yeah; you don't have an awesome rig/ unless your parents bought it........You'll be fine. Just play what you have until it breaks. Mow some yards. Save. Mow some more yards....buy a better amp. My first rig was a Crate BX100. Isn't that like 90% of everybody's first rig? HA HA HA!! We all have to start somewhere. Humble beginings are a good thing. Don't sweat it.

My first rig: Beat-up old H&H VS Bassamp head, running through a crappy PA cab that I dumpster dived out of a skip outside an old church that was being renovated.

Wish I still had that head, not really missing the cab.

I'm 16 and I have a 15 watt Marshall MB. I'm sure it wont be loud enough to play any gigs with, but I'm trying (but failing) to save up for a 150watt Line6 Lowdown combo, which is hard as I don't have time for any kind of job, and my parents would never spend that much on an amp for me. I wish I could find a great second hand bass amp, but there aren't many places to find that in my part of England.

I get really annoyed when people complain about how the tone of their amp isn't perfect, even though they are lucky enough to be able to spend hundreds of £s/$s on a rig. These people must think that great tone compensates for their mediocre ability. But maybe if they spent less time trying to find a perfect tone, and instead stick with a half decent tone, they could become better bassists. A player with real talent can play awesome sounding stuff with whatever resources you give them, instead of acting like women worrying about how good their makeup looks.

@metdistortion: Yeah - I was very lucky to find a decent-ish used head at 17, otherwise I wouldn't have had anything to start with. What's your budget? I've been out of the UK for ten years now but I'm pretty certain there's some good music stores near to you that carry used gear they've picked up as trade-ins. An afternoon calling everywhere in the yellow pages might dig up a bargain or two.

You might also consider building one of these:

Maplin 200W power amp kit

You could run it off the headphone out of your current amp. (Will also need a case of some kind and a power supply). Still doesn't get you a cab, but at least it's another very affordable step on the way.

There are very few music shops in my area, and none of them sell second hand gear.

I'm quite interested in the idea of using that cheap power amp. So I would be able to use it as a bass head, and just need a speaker/cab? Im guessing it would sound awful, but its cheap! :D. My dad would also be able to help me with it, as he used to be a technical manager at the BBC.
