About 20 years ago it was either a comb over or buzz cut. I detest seeing any form of comb over so buzz cut it was. #3 in summer, #4 in winter.

For the first one I went to a barbers then bought a set of clippers and have done it myself every 3 or 4 weeks since.

I've been giving myself buzzcuts for the past half year or so. No guard or anything. To be honest, I'm not sure why I started, or continue, other than that I aspire to a complete lack of personal style.

There are some good, really cute barbers in town, too. Maybe that was just it, you go for a couple weeks and be around dudes out in the field and stuff, and then you go to get your hair cut and you just think, "Right, women, THAT's what they look like." Maybe I was just tired of that, I dunno.

I have being doing it for the last 5 years but I dont much hair left, I use an Andis clipper and whal shaver for the back . You want to use a corded clipper so you have enough power.

These days I spend more time on my beard than on my hair.

Used when I went with one level buzz cut; currently having my barber do fades.

I know guys that do the fades to themselves and that impresses me for doing your own head is trickier than it looks.

It's not that hard if the sides aren't too short. For example you could cut the top at #3 guard, then go straight up the sides with a #2. It fades kind of naturally.

Long time ago I just buzzed my dome with clippers from target. For sure saved cash for a couple years. Then I went longer and at a certain length even Supercuts would eff it up literally every time. So I went to a pricier place.

Last time the dude cut my hair with a funky straight razor. I'm getting one for my facial hair now, because it looked awesome. Has a guard and replaceable blades. Called a "Feather," and here is a link:

No affiliation. Just looks better than my bic, so if you wanna clean up your neck or sides or whatever, I bet that thing would work. Will know for sure in a week or two when it's here. No more raking my chin.

If I ever start losing my hair, yes, I'm cutting it myself. Use a number 2 and just buzz it all. Razor to clean up. But if you have hair to spare, eh, I've seen some pretty bad self chop jobs.

It must be the middle ground that's tricky. Too much to sacrifice to chrome dome or super short? Not enough to grow out and get a good cut? Eh... I would say be conservative and go shorter rather than longer, which anyone can do.

But is your appearance worth, say, 20-40 bucks every 2-3mo? Mine is, and I mostly dont care about that stuff. You gotta be real thin up top to warrant the self buzz (unless that's just your style). Or wicked cheap.

I do the same only it’s after going to the hair styling school for a cut.
Kind of expect it there for a $10 student cut, but at a professional salon?

The students are so scared that they just pick pick pick at your hair and take forever.
One of the instructors, who used to cut hair in the army came by one time.
With just a comb and scissors, he gave me a great cut in under two minutes.
The students all changed their major to coffee barista that day.

Sometimes in the past I would think, "Why would anyone pay another person to cut their hair?"

But right now I think, I do like the idea of having someone else cut your hair. We want to look somewhat presentable and professional don't we? Isn't that really a big part of being a musician, particularly a rock musician? Elvis and the Beatles were both known for their hairstyles.
