Any of you fellas cutting your own hair during quarantine? Doing anything wacky? Or growing it out???

I've had short hair of one style or another since college. Haven't had mine cut in a couple of months as I'm doing the work-from-home thing.

Think I might be on the verge of investing in a good set of Wahl clippers pretty soon. :smug:

I've had a Wahl performer set for going on two years. Been cutting my hair with it every two weeks to a month. If you're cool with going full Jarhead whenever you screw up (which has been more than once, tbh) it's not a bad route and at $20 CAD at Walmart, just in the ballpark of two haircuts without a tip, it's saved me a fair few dollars at this point. Going on 500 to 700 CAD. I just clean out the "blades" with a toothbrush every time and every half year or so I apply a couple drops of 3-in-1 oil onto a paper towel and give them a wipe with that, using the toothbrush to get the oil into the teeth.

Honestly, if you want to get into it, now is the time, plenty of good tutorials on the subject have been put on YouTube recently.

I keep mine short when I have gigs but it's getting long and starting to annoy me so any day I will break out the clippers, nothing fancy just a #3.

Yes sir! I was up to 8 weeks since my last cut and something needed to be done. Took it all off Saturday. It had been 20 years since I last buzzed my head - feels great!

Fortunately our female singer at the time was a hairdresser and was able to make good the mess I'd made.

Yeah when stuff like that happens I just go all over with no guide. But I also have no hairdresser friend at all. Somebody said it earlier on the thread - why pay somebody to screw up my hair when I could screw it up for free. Though tbh my last barbers weren't bad at all, you'd just end up with some that could intuitively get how your head "works" after a while, and others might need a few tries to get the details just right - I kinda came to the conclusion that it'd be cheaper to go through the awkward learning curve myself and the learning process is an investment in self improvement.

I did for about 20 years, kept it very short and neat. About two months ago I gave myself a bad haircut and decided that I would just swear off ever cutting it again. I went online to find ways of dealing with the awkward stages and how to keep long hair healthy. I am about two months into the journey and an pretty happy with how it’s coming. The hair on the top of my head is much thicker than I thought it would be and it’s growing about a half inch or more per month. I’m wearing hats most of the time that I’m outside of the house right now and probably will be for a few more months. I’m looking forward to having long hair for the first time in about 40 years.

I've done it in the past when desperate. Still...$14 every 2-3 months is cheap enough.
Every boss I ever had in the air force was always raggin' on me for my "slightly longer than regulation" yet very luxuriant hair.

It's been about 4 months now, what with the barbers all shut down as non essential. Starting to feel desperate again.

Wahl trimmers and various guards.

I had longish rocker/grungish hair since early 80s to mid 90s. Been close cropped ever since that and no facial hair (except for a goatee for a year or so). Well, I'm necessarily letting my hair grow out and have a nice six weeks worth of beard grown. Still kinda look ratty but I entertain my teenage daughter by coming up with all kinds of sculpted hair craziness. Mohawk, double-Mohawk, reverse Mohawk, Sputnik, the Donald Trump, the David Petraeus and so on.

My hair is pretty much all grey these days and so is my beard. I've kinda got this look going on right now. Think I'll go get myself some Lee overalls!

My wife told me last week that she couldn’t stand it anymore and wanted to cut my hair. I was reluctant but when she told me that she cuts her own (out of necessity) I relented. It’s not bad but I can’t wait to get it cut by a pro.

Well, I need to learn how to cut my own hair!! My barber just texted me that she is out of that business. It’s been February since I had my last cut!! At 70 yo I’m thinking a pony tail is not right for me. But a ball head? I could rock that!!

You can clip it short and just let it go a few weeks at a time.

I wouldn't do a complete shave. Too many older men do that, and I don't think it looks good on anyone. Old or young.

Another DIY buzz cutter here. Use a #1 guard standing over the trash can in the backyard.
Then have my wife block the back and clean up my neck. Love my buzz cut.:thumbsup:

Had a Flowbee in the olden days when I used to wear it longer.

I offered to cut my wife's hair since her stylist is shut down from the pandemic... she declined.:eek:

I've saved enough money on haircuts to buy a boutique bass...
but a boutique bass just wouldn't look right with my DIY hairstyle.:rollno:
