Does Cables Matter for a Bass

Wrong.

Tony and I spoke at length before I tried both cables - and he mentioned to me it was his goal with the Forte to sound as close as possible to the Lyric HG.

So my "predisposition" was that they would sound very similar. I honestly didn't have any prepaired thoughts/opinions.

Being the Lyric HG is a solid core design, and Evidence Audio's "flagship" cable, I thought that would win me over. But TONE ALONE - I prefered the Forte which is multi-stranded.

So I went into testing these two cables thinking they would sound extremely similiar, and if anything, the solid core Lyric HG to win me over. The exact opposite happend.

Now what are you going to tell me? :eyebrow: That I "imagined the 'lesser stranded' cable sounding better because I felt bad for it" ??
WRONG!!! :D

No, I am going to tell you (again) that hearing is subjective and your perceived differences could very well have been imagined. Or not; hell, I don't know. I am NOT telling you that I know for a fact that there are no differences (though I remain skeptical), but you can crow all you want about your "credentials"; hearing is subjective and just because you are convinced you hear a difference, that does not prove that there actually is one. Blustering about your "knowledge of cables" and your "discerning ears" cuts no ice with me. It's just so much self aggrandizing; it's common as dirt on internet fora. Anyone can claim to have a PhD in astrophysics, a black belt in karate, and a 12 inch schlong.

I believe that you sincerely believe there is a difference, and that should be enough for you. What difference does it make to you whether I hear what you hear or not? So I do not accept your "evidence". So what? Use what ever cables you want and be happy.

We disagree. Big deal.

And how would you suggest I do this "testing"? Plug in a gazillion cables and listen to them? Whether I thought I heard a difference or thought I didn't hear a difference, it wouldn't prove a thing.
I gave up awhile ago. People believe what they want to believe.
Bongo already did the testing for us, providing hard, irrefutable actual data, yet people still believe what they want to believe. It's weird, I don't understand it, and it will never end. Someone else did a similar test with power cables.
Ever experience this? I go play my bass in my rehearsal space one day and I just can't get a good sound. Come back in a day or two and it sounds incredible, and I haven't changed a thing. I know it's my ears but I can't explain it.

It's a few years old info, but Monster used some bad judgement on what 1/4" actually meant and they made the plugs too big. It actually damaged gear.

From Phil Jones Bass manual:
"We recommend that you DO NOT use “Monster” Brand cables because we have found compatibility issues with their jack plugs and our input sockets. USING “MONSTER” BRAND CABLES CAN DAMAGE THE INPUT JACK OR OTHER SOCKETS ON THE BASS BUDDY Should any damage occur from using MONSTER CABLES warrantee for repairs to unit are not covered under PJB warranty."

If Monster cables last forever there there are numbers of these bad cables still out there. I don't remember seeing a recall. And once you plug in one of these cables and it ruins your jack, then no other cable is going to work as good.

There's some kind of joke about a monster schlong there, I think.

Actually no. The Monster cable will outlast a cheap cable by 10, and when it finally does crap out on you, you get another one free, forever. Over the long haul Monster is a good value, just don't believe that horses**t about better tone.
Or the other horse**** about arrows indicating the direction to keep the electrons flowing properly. Monster is not a good value, sorry. They are well made but so are many cables that cost less and have lifetime warranties. And they don't break jacks. And they use lies and distortions of science to sell cables. Skin effect...electrons only flowing one way...lol!

I'll tell you what kind of crap company Monster is...a few years ago, I went to Best Buy to buy a cheap stereo, and the salesman kept relentlessly pushing Monster on me. I kept telling him speaker wire is all the same and I just want the cheap stuff.

So he takes me to some big display Monster put up entitled "Take The Monster Challenge" or some sort of similar slogan. They had two identical setups with speakers...one set was wired with the cheap raw speaker wire Best Buy sells in a spool, the other set was wired with raw Monster speaker cable. The salesman showed it to me, and explained how Monster cables let more frequency response come through because they're made better. Sure enough, the Monster setup sounded better while the other setup sounded like it had a blanket over it. I remarked about the noticeable difference, then asked to see the receivers hidden behind the display.

"Um, the receivers?" he asks?

"Yeah, the receivers powering these speakers."

"Um, why do you want to see them?"

"I want to see if they really are identical."

"Um, OK."

He quickly removes the cover, shows me the matching receivers, then tries to cover it back up quickly. I said, "Wait a second, let me just see something here..." I look at the settings, and sure enough, the treble was turned down in the receiver powering the speakers with cheap cables. I turn it back up, switch between the two, then I say to my wife really loud so everyone around could hear it, "Hey honey, check it out...the treble knob was turned down, and now these cheap cables sound just like the Monster cables!"

Then I lectured the guy about how I was a pro musician and know all the tricks, and I added, "The only thing preventing me from walking out right now is the price of this stereo. So if you really want this sale, you're going to sell me the cheap cables and you're not going to mention Monster again. And don't even mention the extended warranty!"

He says, "Well the extended warranty is a really good..."

"Bye."

"OK, OK!"

Fun day ;)

Stumbling around this evening I ran across this:
Invalid Link Removed

It's a short explanation of how fast electrons actually move.... which turns out to be about 84 millimeters per hour through a .1cm copper wire. Not exactly sure how much bearing that has on this discussion, but I found it interesting.

Yes, it surprised me when I learned that as well. Like syrup being squeezed through a tiny tube.

Also: that's DC, for the signals we are talking about the electrons don't actually move at all, they just wiggle back and forth.

Well done, Jimmy! :D Anyhow, I totally dig why people hate monster. But, I spent like $18 to have a 12' cable for life....that can't really be such a bad deal, considering how quickly I tear through cables ;) I usually purchase the cheapest Monster 1/4" cable I see, and on my way. Never considered paying the insanely high prices for the "upgraded" models. I've been my families tech support since I was 10, which means I was in charge of buying cables. Which means I've been wise to the cable scam since I was 11 ;)
