Does Fender Make ...

... a 5-string with a neck profile BESIDES the "Deep C?"

I would love a Fender fiver but I do not like the full-feeling neck profile -- it's simply too chunky in my hand. (I don't like the Roscoe Beck asymmetrical, either)

I have been doing my research but have yet to come up with anything.

Can anyone share some info/options on this?

Sadowsky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not an answer to his question:ninja:

Sadowsky's sounds and feel quite different from Fenders. Some come out preferring Sadowsky, some perfer Fender.

And Iota, I've never played one. All the Fender 5s I've played have the big C shaped necks, and I agree, they're pretty chunky, but still OK for me. But hopefully someone on here will be able to tell you one that has a slimmer neck.

Wow. Your completley right. The feel makes the feel. And I like that feel, more than I like the feel of Sadowsky's, or the feel of Lull's, or any other Fender copy. I also enjoy the tone a lot more. Its called a PERSONAL PREFERENCE, and I dont enjoy being riticuled for my opinions.:spit:

If you have ever talked to IotaNet, you'd realize he's the LAST person to care about a brand name. I think he's owned about one of every single brand out there, if not more than that.

There's an unmistakable Fender sound and feel. He's asking for help finding this.

Now, IotaNet: As far as I know, they do not make something like this. I too am in the same boat looking for a nice passive, Fender-esque five string. Check out the KSD Proto Series if you don't have any luck with the Fenders.

It's possible that you could have a luthier reshape the neck profile for you. If you find a real good bass that it's worth doing to (IE one you really like), then I'd go that route.

What kind of profile do you prefer? Something more along the lines of an Ibanez SR, or a little thicker?

My favorite profile is that of an Ibanez SRX0X but with wide spacing at the bridge -- preferably with a 34" scale. (And yes -- that pretty much equals "Sadowsky" but I shudder at the thought of spending THAT MUCH for a bass right now.)

My next fave is a Carvin asymetrical but my experience with stock Carvin electronics kinda leaves me "meh." :hmm:

This may come down to a Lakland 55-0X (which also has a nice flat neck profile) but I'd prefer a 34" scale and I'm looking for dual J pups. The JO could fit the bill but they tend to be on the heavy side -- and they're 35-inchers.

I've been doing my homework and the reason I started this thread was to see if there was something that I'd missed.

Why not keep the fretless, sell the others, and buy a Sadowsky with VTC?

(I am just trying to push your buttons because it sounds like the answer to your problem. ;))

The JO5 does have a nice thin neck - but I too didn't like the 35" scale thing. It is awful when switching between that and 34" scale...then in my case, throw 41-3/4" scale (double bass) in the mix and you get a real headache.

So if I were to ask "Does Audi make a 4 wheel drive car?"

You'd reply: ......Suburu!!!!!!!!

For the OP: Try a Custom Shop Jazz/P they'll make any kind of neck your heart desires.. for about $2000-4000 range.

I heard the Roscoe Beck Fender has a neck profile more like a Tobias or MTD. There is a nice one for sale on the forums as I write. A great and inexpensive non-Fender alternative would be a USA Peavey Millennium V. I have owned two, and the one I have now has pretty much become my favorite five. If I just didn't think my SR5 HH was so pretty (sounds great too) it would be out the door.:hiding:

+1. If you find a Fender that sounds right and is the right weight, etc, you could have the neck shaved. Steve Poon and Andy Brown both had their Valenti necks reshaped by Michael Dolan and IIRC, it cost them about $150 each.

I've started Using USACG. One reason was the flatter profile of their 5 string necks.

Now THERE'S some useful information!

Thanks, Nino!
