...And if your 100% and my 100% are not the same, your parents seriously need to get their tax dollars back from your education, because somewhere along the line, somebody done messed up with your arithmetic...

I'm sincerely not trying to insult you or pick on you, and I hope you know that. We're both TBers after all, and as I said earlier in this thread, I admire and respect any bass player on that basis alone :)

However, the point of this thread is to clarify what exactly it means to be a musician, so being exact in your definition would serve that purpose. If you don't mean 100%, please revise your definition with what you really meant to say.

You asked, does playing an instrument make you a musician? If you just want people to accept your definition, you shouldn't have phrased it as a question, because that opens the matter to discussion. This is a discussion forum, after all. If you're not willing to discuss it, what's the point?

I do not know that your definition is right; in fact I disagree with it. Further, 100% is not open to discussion. 100% means 100%; that's the beauty of math -- there are no semantics in mathematics. You didn't really mean 100%, and that's absolutely fine. I would just like to know what you did mean, so I'm asking you to clarify. I don't think that's trolling; it's just an honest question and I mean no harm by it.

Like I said before, it just depends on who you ask. The IRS has one definition of a musician, you have one, and I have one. There are many others, too. Even dictionaries disagree, and that's not a bad thing. That's the purpose of studying and discussing semantics, and how language evolves over time. There's no reason to get upset over this, and we don't all have to agree on a single definition, either.

Also, using words like gay as in a "gayer version of a definition" is strictly prohibited here on Talkbass. Please refer to the rules for more info... I'd like to continue this discussion if you're up for it, and I take it you don't want your account suspended, either.

when i use the term GAY....i mean stupid.....teens now dont use the term "gay" as u think it is.......

I'm 24, not 80, lol. I know how you meant it ;) I'm just saying, it's prohibited on Talkbass, regardless.

I do, in all sincerity, look forward to your revised definition. I asked a few friends what they think and was surprised by some of their responses, too. For example, a friend of mine said a musician is "anyone who makes art with sound." (She is a 21-year-old college student studying graphic design, if that makes a difference.)

I personally believe that being a musician means approaching music as an occupation. I for instance can call myself a part time musician because of the studio work and gigs I do (which draw a nice supplementary income to augment my day job's paycheck).

I think in the artistic sense, one that plays with great dedication should be called just that, an artist.

I think that makes a lot of sense. "Musician," to me, is a job title, whereas "bass player" describes an activity that one does, which may or may not mean that it's your job, too. That also makes sense with the terms "part-time musician," "full-time musician," "professional musician," "semi-professional musician," etc, whereas you never hear someone say he is a "part-time bass player."

Haha, nice! :) Like I said, there is no single definition, because it depends on who you ask. We're all right because everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, in order to communicate effectively, it helps if we agree on some basic concept of the meanings of words, which is what dictionaries attempt to nail down. In this case, the first (which, in a dictionary, indicates that it's the more commonly accepted) definition is music as an occupation. That doesn't mean Def 2 is wrong, just that Def 1 is more commonly accepted as the meaning of the word.

(Also, not to be put you on the spot, but if you want to use that language, according to TB rules, you have to cover it completely, such as $@#&%#@, or you risk getting your account suspended :hiding:)
